Easy Pass power supply

Featured Replies

We have an Easy Pass for the Bangkok Expressway and wondered how it is powered? The user manual doesn't mention. I guess there's a small battery inside? How long does it last for and is there a warning its running low? Trying to avoid the embarrassing reverse at the gate issue later on and all that.

They send a notice prior to the burn out date to come in for replacement. My first one in NY lasted for about 10 years as I recall.

We've moved twice since we got the beast so no notice is going to reach us :(

I expect it will just stop working.

No need to reverse, you also recived an Easypass card, that works if something wrong with the remote.

Got caught out by mine a couple of months ago. It failed to work at a gate and the helpful Army MP in the box said it was probably the battery. I found the makers webpage on-line and they claim a 7 year life for the internal battery. Mine is 5 years old with very little use since I live in the provinces.

I tried to find a way to open the case to replace the battery but no luck, seems to be sealed. Have made a note to pull into an office adjacent to a tollgate next visit and get it replaced since it still has around 800 ThB on account.

Can the card issued with the RFID be used at any none EasyPass toll booth instead of cash?

You didn't expect that a notice would reach you if you hadn't moved, did you?

Ohhhh..... the reverse of shame !!!!...

I've been stuck behind some 'dumb, stupid, blind idiot' numerous times... they must be thinking... Wow, all these other people are so stupid not using this clear lane, only to discover its an Easy Pass lane !!!... fortunately this is happening less...

Now then.... I've been the 'dumb, stupid, blind idiot' myself when the Easy Pass didn't work through the Windscreen film on my car (a couple of cars ago)... It took me a few attempts to work it out after which time I always had to hold the Easy Pass 'tag' outside of the window as I pull up to the booth.

Now, on my current car I know the Windscreen film is no issue, I know my Easy Pass is always credited but I have had the 'Toll Booth failure' issue... ... I've pulled up to the Easy Pass Booth and nothing happens, I reverse and try again, nothing happens again... A guy walks over, I give him my Easy Pass Tag, he waves it around, nothing happens again... I am forced to do the 'Reverse of Shame' to another booth.. everyone looks at me as if I'm a 'dumb, stupid, blind idiot'.... then another car pulls up and has the same issue with the same faulty tag detector and I somehow feel a little better, a little vindicated...

Easy Pass hiccups are few and far between these days..... However, if the 5 year time span is true we are about to face a period of 'worn batteries' and the 'reverse of shame' will become once again a common sight at the Toll Gates...

Yes mine stopped working and had to go to the highway office to replace the unit

I use between 2 and 3 EasyPass gates every day, probably get a non-read once a month.

Invariably if you just sit there like a lemon an attendant arrives, hand him the unit (it has a barcode on the side) and the barrier opens. Not actually had to reverse for some considerable time (I'm guaranteed to need to reverse on the way home tonight now) :)

I have no idea how this system works, but make frequent trips on the motorway system and think I should have the card.

If I travel in a car with other people who carry cards on the system which card is read or is there some on/off control on the cards ?

The Easy Pass involves a 'Tag' which you stick to your Windscreen and a Card (like a credit card) which you can keep on your person or in a compartment / pocket in your car.

When you top up your Easy Pass you hand over the 'Card' to the Toll Booth Employee who will charge your card to your specified amount (B500, B1000 etc).

You will be handed back a receipt.

At this point the 'Tag' (in your windscreen) will be automatically charged (no need to remove it).

You see your Credit display digitally on the Toll Both Gate as you pass through the Toll Gate each time.

I've never tried it, but I don't see why using your Tag in another vehicle wouldn't work.

My Easy Pass is registered to my car two cars ago.. i.e. I've used my Easy Pass in two cars since purchasing it.

You can use the same Easy pass in different vehicles. The company I work for has some cars with the them fixed and others where you grab a shared Easy pass and use that instead.

As an Easypass virgin, how do I go about getting my first one?

@millwall_fan - just look for an EasyPass banner outside one of the offices near the toll gates, park up and ask. You'll need some form of ID and your car registration (or a copy). Not sure what the fee is now but even I managed to get one with my zero Thai.

@Disting - not seen anything detailing a time limit on credit but there likely is one, probably 12 months from last use.

General - I reload mine online from my Bangkok Bank account, look for EXAT as the destination, you'll need the serial number off the card (not the unit).

I got mine from one of the 'offices' situated just after the toll booth. They have a website as well, thaieasypass.com
