Security is boosted on Samui Island

Samui District Mayor Decha Kangsanan (เดชา กังสนันท์) has ensured security for tourists and the general public in the area, expressing confidence that the sabotage could not occur on the island as security measure has been tightened continuously.

Following the recent bombings in Hat Yai of Songkhla Province, Mr. Decha has insisted that the incident would not affect tourists’ confidence to travel to Samui Island.

Meanwhile, police and related units have boosted security by installing close-circuit televisions (CCTVs) in many important locations, particularly the airport.

According to Mr. Decha, the boosted security measure is not only for sabotage prevention, but it also helps the authorities in suppressing illicit drug problem.

Another load of government propaganda, do you think the bombers worry about Thai security look down the south the bombers can do what they like and there are thousands of security personnel, it's only a matter of time before a tourist destination gets hit, the ideal target would be a car ferry.

:D I hope you're deadwrong but IF it happens...................... :D

Look what happened to tourism in Bali :o

How much would it cost to have a couple of security at donsak checking all cars . Everyone has to wait anyway for at least 30 minutes so there would be no hold ups .

why wait until it is too late , surely security on Samui should be much easier to control than say Phuket .

Yes it would be easy to check before cars or motorbike got on the ferry, but why do it nothing has happened, and you know the saying don't react before the fact.

Better safe than sorry! Or do you John1, think nothing will happen to you? You never know before its too late, and death is fast but being a cripple the rest of your life is not a game to me.

Ferries could be checked easily, that's right.

But what about the thousands of (southern) fisherman's boats travelling/fishing in the Gulf of Thailand... :D ?

Who's checking those? :o

yes i agree , the boats are almost uncheckable as to what they might unload.

the muslim communities on samui are i believe involved heavily in fishing too.

it would be almost impossible to prevent a motorcycle rigged bomb being parked in chawengs main street , and surely it wont be too long before the dreaded suicide bomber makes his or her thai debut.

i have just returned from a ( very enjoyable) few days on samui and i didnt see a policeman the whole time i was there , other than the ones who hang around the booth at the bophut / ring road traffic lights.

the surprising thing is that there hasnt been an attack on foreign targets yet , be it on samui , phuket or in bangkok.

it took many years of ira bombings in the uk before people became security conscious and the authorities made an effort to educate the public to be aware of things like unattended parcels etc.

i see no evidence of even the most rudimentary systems being instigated here in thailand , or any public awareness campaigns and when the authorities confidently boast that samui is safe because they have installed some cameras at the airport , then you can rest assured that samui is as unsecure as it ever was.

is anybody actually 'bomb aware" in this country , there are garbage bags lying around everywhere , people leave luggage unattended in airports and bus stations , motorcycles are parked everywhere , often with parcels left strapped to the back of the seat.

like i said , the bombers could have a field day in any of the resorts or the capital , if they wanted.

as much as i detested tony blair for entering into dialogue with the ira scum , it was a shrewd move and resulted in an end to the terror campaign in england.

whether the thais will ever enter into dialogue with the muslims of the south in an attempt to bring a halt to all this i dont know , i doubt if the muslims would even be receptive to dialogue.

these terror campaigns that go on and on and on , bombing after bombing , are almost impossible to stop. just look at iraq , the americans with all their technology and a huge armed presence have had no success at all.

the muslims will eventually destroy the economies of the areas they terrorise. it seems an insoluble problem.

"Boosted Security on Samui"

What a joke !

Lets just be happy that the muslim fundamentalists are not targeting "Tourist Destinations" yet.

And after reading the news after all bombings, they have not yet learned how easy it is to make a real bomb.

All you need is Ammonium Nitrate and Diesel - then you got your highly effective bomb.

Since Ammonium Nitrate is used as a fertilizer within the agriculture industry it is very easy to buy, no licence needed - and Diesel we all know where to get, right !?

Just look at Bali and Oklahoma City, both were this kind of bombs - very cheap and very easy to make - and NO "Boosted Security" will ever be able to stop them...

So, lets just hope that the fundamentalists also in the future will stay away from "Tourist Destinations".

CCtv already in operation in Lamai beach rd. Considering most crimes such as bag snatching are pinned on kids from the mainland wouldn't it be a good idea to have "CCTV in operation" signs up to act as a detterent and give tourists a little bit of peace of mind???

That's why these acts are called Terror - NOBODY ever will be able to 'prevent' such an act of thourough horror!

How?

There so many spots, immeasurable possibilities to stage such an act.

They can check whatever, wheresoever, whensoever, whomsoever if it is meant to happen it will - it only takes a few nutters..
