BANGKOK: -- FORMER deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban has told the Criminal Court he did not defame three red-shirt leaders or break electoral law in an election campaign interview in 2011.

The Criminal Court Monday set October 26 as the date for consideration of written evidence from both sides.

Suthep is accused of defaming Jatuporn Prompan, Nattawut Saikua and Weng Tojirakarn, who are also Pheu Thai Party members, by calling them terrorists and arsonists during the May 22, 2011, interview, thus also violating articles 53 and 137 of the electoral law.

Suthep denies the charges.

How many times already, and more recently not the least from the Shins' side and that of their bunch of red criminals, such claims of 'defamation', to stop the truth of their actions being told...?

Anyone not wearing bright red glasses who has been around, before, during(!), and after the (2009 already, and) 2010 insurrection(!) in Bangkok, and elsewhere(!) in the land, will IMO not one second deny the said three red leaders, among others(!), were indeed terrorists and arsonists! Or does one need to kill a soldier/civilian, or set shops ablaze, by oneself to be called so? Isn't it, when possible, even worse to incite crazed up violent mobs to do so, while hiding behind an MP, or such, position? While it has all been well documented, in sound and pictures! And still voiding jail time until today for what has been sentenced by the Courts already as cherry on the cake?

There is the LM law, but these are other 'defamation' laws needing to be changed and reformed in the first place.

Actually, it's part of Thainess and if you knew anything about the defamation laws in Thailand you would know that the veracity of the claims have little bearing on the outcome of any defamation trial. They might very well be guilty of a lot more than Uncle Too's favourite monk has claimed but might still win the case.

The Criminal Court yesterday set October 26 as the date for consideration of written evidence from both sides.

Suthep is accused of defaming Jatuporn Prompan, Nattawut Saikua and Weng Tojirakarn, who are also Pheu Thai Party members, by calling them terrorists and arsonists during the May 22, 2011, interview, thus also violating articles 53 and 137 of the electoral law.

Suthep denies the charges.

The court said time was needed to transcribe a video recording of the interview.

Suthep told the court he was innocent and that the accusation came from a mix of different answers he gave to different reporters during the interview to make it appear he said those things.

He requested the court continue the trial in his absence but said he would be represented by his |lawyer.

The court granted the request, saying Suthep can be represented by his lawyer, but noted that maximum punishment is a prison term of no more than 10 years.

Suthep left the court without speaking to reporters.

Thank you for this splendid example of defamation. Calling someone a traitor and murderer without a shred of proof. Writing such in Thailand in Thai would have you charged already and not just because we have an appointed government.

Who jerked your chain? I certainly don't have any problems with ANYBODY telling the truth about Thaksin's mercenaries, or his perjuring sister. It would be nice though if the court case could get started, and the message that violence is not an acceptable political tool made clear.

Do you have any links, references, newspaper articles and the like to back up what you have said. If not perhaps it is only in your mind and in your opinion that he is guilty of those offenses.

Of course saying what you have said without any proof of the allegations must be close to slander or libel, but don't worry, Suthep doesn't care about little people like you today, but one day perhaps he will.
