Not a big drinker but had a few of these the other night...wow! The brand is actually "beer Laos". Finding it hard to source. Anyone know if the big chains carry it?

Yes even Makro in Phetchabun stocks this now.

Both dark and regular.

That would be my first port of call if I were the OP.

Love it, usually have it at Makro and Foodland. I have found it in some 7-11's. Apparently it makes me snore like a chainsaw! Not sure, I don't hear anything!

Picked some up today Khonkaen Makro. Why is it so expensive? The cost of making a small bottle of beer in Laos must be around 3 satang. Obviously Thailand and Laos don't have a trade agreement

It's subject to import tax just like any other beers from outside the country.

You will notice every bottle has the black paper strip over the lid.

Yes but top quality European beer a few hundred baht cheaper....and shipped a lot further with far more Labour manufacturing costs

Which 'top quality' Euro beer are you referring to? The ones I like are not cheaper.

As of new years eve, Thailand had agreed to abide by the 7th ASEAN charter. It calls for the complete abolition of all import duties on any alcohol traded by all ASEAN partners. It will be interesting to see if Thailand abides by this. Would sure be nice to have easy access to beer laos, Bintang, and many others, duty free. Imagine what a hit Chang, Singha and Tiger would take?

Which is why they hammer it now.

Thailand is very good at protecting its local markets.

I believe Thailand runs the risk of becoming a pariah, and subject to retaliatory measures, within ASEAN, if they ignore the tenets of the new charter. It is one of the most important to date. And Thailand is not the tiger it once was. They had better keep that in mind. If it is within their capability.

Love the stuff I remember a few years back it was everywhere up in Udon in the bars and whatever and was the same price as the local brews. I don't know if it was taxed at a lower rate before or if it was all being brought in on the sly. Then all of a sudden nobody was stocking it as it was "too expensive" too carry. Can still get it at supermarkets but I would love to see the day it was available in bars again. At the new agreed to ASEAN zero tax rate...

I'm pretty sure most countries in ASEAN would prefer to protect their local markets.

Yes, that may be true, but there are many aspects of this 7th charter, that aim to open up some aspects of those markets, such as the free trade of alcoholic beverages. It is as good a place to start, as any. Will Thailand abide by this new treaty, which goes into effect New Years Eve, of this year? We shall see. The cost of not respecting this treaty, and the continued behavior of corruption that would go along with the lack of respect of this treaty (massive payments by Chang, Singha, etc. to both the senators and the customs dept.) could give Thailand a real black eye, in its own neighborhood, especially if a few more law abiding neighbors go along with the treaty they have signed and ratified.

I remember around 2005 that my hotel in Phuket was one of the few places on the island where you could buy it. I used to ship it direct from Bangkok every week.

Sold like hot cakes - and I drank a fair few as well :)

I drink beer very little... maybe less than ten bottles a year, I don't enjoy the taste much... but I definitely enjoy drinking Beerlao!
