I have a Toshiba Satellite A75 - unexplically lost sound, running XP Pro.

- no hardware conflicts

- uninstalled/reinstalled audio drivers

- Checked logs - nothing indicated there.

I'm fearing its actually the soundcard on the board and obviously nought I can do about that except sending it into the shop.

Any thoughts???

Is your volume control icon doofer in the taskbar visible? Nothing muted there?

Tried headphones? Plugging in headphones usually mutes the laptop speakers. Could be an electrical fault permanently muting them.

Nothing is muted.

Tried headphones and just silence. :o

Hi Brit,

If the on-board sound is well and truly fried, try to find a USB soundcard. Not too expensive.

Alternatively, try one of those USB VOIP handsets (looks like a mobile phone, connects to a USB port and interfaces with for example skype).

Mine costed around 500 Baht, and has a mic and headphone jack as well.

This may sound stupid but.....

Does your laptop have a physical volume knob? Last time a friend lost his sound the knob had been turned by accident (he didn't know it existed).

EDIT It seems to be between the USB and headphone sockets on the right side of the machine (if the piccies I've found are accurate).

They do seem somewhat superfluous (sp) on a modern laptop.

EDIT Now tell me how to get rid of my Windows security alert icon :D:)

Hi All

Pressing the FN button next to the windows key + the up or down button sometimes helps also. All depends what type of laptop you have

I think myself computers are a lifetime learning process and im still learning.

Nice to hear the problem was solved for you britmaveric.

Happened me also.

Nope, my problem (now solved) was the security center flagging that I had no firewall even when I turned on the Windows firewall.

My Windows is 100% genuine :o
