PM: New draft charter must be internationally accepted

BANGKOK, 15 September 2015 (NNT) – According to Justice Minister Gen Paiboon Khumchaya, the Prime Minister has emphasized that it is crucial for the new draft constitution to gain acceptance from the international community.


Following the Cabinet meeting, Gen Paiboon said Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed all concerned ministers to help ensure that all contents of the new draft charter comply with international standards and are deemed acceptable in the eyes of foreigners. The premier also insisted that any members of the new charter drafting team should have an understanding of the government’s intention to reform the country.

As for the appointment of the new chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, Gen Paiboon disclosed that Prime Minister Prayut will review the names of candidates and hold a meeting on the matter within the next 2-3 days. The appointment is required to be made no later than October 5th this year.

The Justice Minister also spoke of the 6-month timeframe allowed for the charter drafting task, citing the premier as saying the procedures involved are to be shortened where possible.

Now they need the help/advice/support of "foreigners"?

I'm happy to run my eyes over it if they wish ... for a small fee ... 1.7 million baht seems to be the going rate and what they've been paying themselves to waste a year of doodling nonsense on scraps of paper.

It's quite irrelevant who or what accepts a "draft" anything - the ONLY thing that matters is that the Thai people accept the final Constitution contents by popular mandate, that is to say a decisive majority vote in a free and fair referendum.............

Rejected in Thailand.....starting to think this is just an attempt to gain credibility before a second round attempt at the same charter. It worked in Ireland for the nice treaty.....

The elite of Thailand will ensure the charter suits them..........as always, the Thai people will be second!

Rather than make excuses for not giving up power or having democratic elections, why doesn't he just come straight out and say it. Dear Ex-General and unelected, self-imposed power hungry PM, you are fooling no one, except yourself.

Several countries have already voiced their concern about the lack of basic freedoms in the country. They have said that they would like to see the country normalized as soon as possible and restore civilian authority. How can other countries accept the draft charter if the general population was not allowed to participate in its drafting? Will He have those countries that do not accept the draft charter for AA?

Does USA/ France/Germany worry if Thailand accept their charter?

A good constitution is written for the people to insure their liberty and freedoms and not for a government to use as a tool to use for tyranny over it's people. With that being said, a good an acceptable constitution should always start with these words: We the people of The Kingdom of Thailand, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the Kingdom of Thailand.

Sound-bite for the benefit of the UN, whose member countries Prayuth is convinced read Thai newspapers without thinking.

When he's talking to Thais, he says foreigners don't own Thailand and have no say in what happens in Thailand so butt out.

This man has as many faces as he does audiences - different message to each, which he is convinced they believe.

Free and fair and with reasonable alternatives. How about a referendum with a choice between the yet to be written constitution, the 1997 constitution and the 2007 constitution?

Thailand is no longera sovereign nation, no country is. Thailand depends upon people buying it's products and visiting their shores. What people think about Thais and Thailand before buying and before visiting, matters.
