BANGKOK: -- The deputy prime minister in charge of economy and industry yesterday stated that increased investments into research and development will be needed to raise the quality and competitiveness of Thailand’s products.

Somkid Jatusripitak, the deputy prime minister and head of the government’s economic team, made the call in his address at the “Prime Minister’s Industry Award 2015″ to recipients.

In the opening speech, he stated that the country is standing at a critical juncture where a change will be needed to maintain Thailand’s competitiveness in the global economy.

He commented that the country must adopt a more progressive attitude that will allow greater innovation in products and services produced in the country.

Along these lines, he stated that increased investments in R&D and greater involvement in e-commerce will become vitally important.

He then said a change in old practices is also necessary and local businesses will have to become more involved in critical issues facing the global economy and take into consideration matters such as illegal foreign labor and the environment otherwise Thailand’s goods and services will not be accepted in the world.

In a related development, Industry Minister Attchaka Seebunruang said the ministry is now coordinating with seven other ministries to formulate plans to develop and strengthen local business operator and SMEs.

The plan will place greater priority on SME’s especially new operators who have just entered into the sector and also older operators currently facing problems.

A budget of 2.5 billion Baht has been set aside for the plan and with it the MOI expects to be able to provide assistance for no less than 60,000 operators.

Seems like Somkid understand the way downwards that Thailand is faceing already and much more on a long run if they don't change their practice.

But one think is not necessary: a new plan as this country has hundreds and thousands of plans and neither one is followed up because the wrong people are involved !

changes like, better education, leave the internet alone, an independent and honest judiciary, accepting foreign advice, plan more than two weeks ahead, accepting responsibility, things like that you mean ? wont happen.

Somkid has some good points and there is a lot in Thailand that needs to be reformed. The Prime Minister is well aware of this. Contrary to the postings on ThaiVisa- he is a very intelligent man who listens to advisers in areas he is not an expert on..This is much the same in the Western World where Presidents and Prime Ministers' have scores of people to advise them on issues. The problem with the West right now is that they are way to focused on how he came to power and less on what he is going to do to change things which will ensure real Democracy in Thailand.. The General is not responsible for aviation and fishing problems; nor the lagging economy; poor education., ec. He was a military leader before his new job.He reluctantly took control because there was no alternative. The West seems to be able to give Egypt a pass when the military leader, who now is the Prime Minster, seized power from an elected government. It just so happened that government was associated with the Moslem Brotherhood- the enemy of the West. So that coup was all right but Thailand's coup was wrong? So much hypocrisy in Western foreign policy.

Change in Thailand seems to be something that's talked about but never actually implemented, take education for example.

The best way to improve competitiveness is to allow greater access for foreign companies into the markets in Thailand. Most markets have a few dominant players with no natural competition so they never feel the pressure on their doorstep.

It's amazing how innovative and profitable people can become if their businesses rely on it.

All these people ever do is TALK about the need for change. As far as most of them ever get is to TALK. They never seem to get to the DO part.

What they need to DO, is get rid of the "no fail" policy in school and the "don't ask questions of your teacher" rule.If teachers were paid on the basis of how many of there students got A's and B's in their classes, Thailand mught see more smart, bright kids coming out of school.

Someone said, "Knowledge is power!".
