webfact
DIGITAL GATEWAYDon't fear Internet single gateway: ICT ministerAsina PornwasinThe Nation BANGKOK: -- The objective of the international-Internet single gateway initiative is not to enhance national security, but to help Internet businesses reduce costs by sharing a single gateway, Information and Communication Technology Minister Uttama Savanayana said yesterday.Uttama said the initiative was being explored by the ministry along with other organisations and stakeholders. He did not commit to a timeframe on when the proposal will be sent to the Cabinet for consideration but he said the ministry was not in a hurry to get it finished as it needed to be carefully considered. The public needed to understand that the single gateway would save Internet businesses money, he said, because they would not have to invest in their own gateway.Uttama added that the single gateway was still in the discussion stage. He said businesses would not be forced to use the single gateway."It is to be done on a volunteer basis when we develop the infrastructure. It is not to force them. That is impossible," said Uttama. He said that the end-of-September deadline Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had envisioned for the project was for the ICT Ministry to report the project's progress and was not a deadline for completion. He said the public's liberty and rights were important and the ministry was conscious of that.Thailand's single gateway concept would not be based on a controversial concept from another country, he insisted.Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Dont-fear-Internet-single-gateway-ICT-minister-30269485.html-- The Nation 2015-09-25 RELATED: Govt orders Great Firewall of Thailand

Which is why they tried to do it on the quiet, as a surprise treat for Internet businesses. And to think that some imagined there were sinister motives behind the whole thing... petedk
The public needed to understand that the single gateway would save Internet businesses money, he said, because they would not have to invest in their own gateway. How many businesses invest in a gateway? I can imagine it is only the big international companies. Hey let's make one airport in Thailand. It will save money. To hell with the long queues. While we are at it, let's make only one road leading to Bangkok. It will make it easier for people to find their way around. No more confusion as to which road to take. We can also check all cars coming into Bangkok.
petedk
What about information we receive from foreign TV stations and radio stations? Are these going to be censored? Maybe no problem on a daily basis but if there is some kind of "threat to national security" (major terrorist attack or whatever) then the TV stations could be blocked again (as we saw under the coup). Thian
I'm starting to loose faith in the General. It will be used to spy on people, just like the americans spy every phonecall made in Europe. They even tap Mrs. Merkel's phones. And if they want to spy on all of us then just say so. Don't order that thing in secret and lie about it. Does it also work on satelite-phones?

Bellacissa
I don't fear it, but I'm pretty sure I'll loathe it. Slower browsing speed, greater censorship, a single failure point which will likely be quite consistent in its high failure rate, slower banking transactions, slower POS transactions... I can't think of a single upside.

bobmac10
Big Brother is here to take care of you, Big Brother is your friend, everything will be better now. If there was any doubt about the long term goals of the Junta, they have now been clearly spelled out. This Junta are all about establishing a mighty power base from which they and their paymasters will rule Thailand for a very long time. Democracy is dying bit by bit as they tighten their grip. Increased press censorship will be next, then we will see government propaganda mandatory in schools. There is no doubt Thailand is heading down the North Korea/Iran road. bkkcanuck8
I seem to remember early on Thailand only really did have one international connection by one company and the internet was almost unusable as there was too little international bandwidth.... and this is what they want to move back to? If you are focusing on improving international bandwidth you do not restrict it down to one line/organization - you incentivise and allow competition to increase the bandwidth and you make sure to eliminate and restrict any organization that creates market restrictions and monopolizes the resource. The truth is obvious..... (BTW, the cutting off of facebook which they said was a technical glitch - happened across multiple providers and thus was proof that the government ordered it). Seastallion
The simple fact of the matter is that the internet is now an "essential service" for commerce and communication, and any sort of restrictions on it will also limit commerce and communication. If you want the country to progress, do not let your paranoia over being defamed over-ride free-flow of information. Another angle to the "essential service" aspect is that you should never put all your eggs in one basket. If the single gateway should fail, you need alternatives, and with the internet, that means other already-open gateways.

canuckamuck
Because the existing telecom companies (that already have spent their money on their gateways BTW) are really hurting and need a way to save some money. I bet if you ask them they would prefer to keep their own gateway.
