Pressure mounts on Saudi Arabia over imminent beheading and crucifixion of alleged protester

SAUDI ARABIA: -- International pressure is mounting on Saudi Arabia to stay the execution of young Shi’ite Ali Mohammed al-Nimr, accused of taking part in anti-government protests.

He has been sentenced to be beheaded, and then crucified, although he was a minor at the time of his alleged crimes.

“Well, this is a very politically-motivated case and we can see that from even the punishment that has been allotted, not just the death sentence but the death sentence by crucifixion which is the death sentence which is really reserved for certain punishments where they do want to make an example of somebody,” says the Director of Reprieve’s Death Penalty team Maya Foa.

In February 2012 Shi’ites in Saudi Arabia’s eastern province clashed with security forces as part of the “Arab Spring” movement. Shi’ites are a minority in Sunni Saudi Arabia, and regularly complain of persecution and discrimination.

Both Human Rights Watch and the UN have criticised his trial.

Since when does this babaric nation listen to the outside world....they seem to have great pleasure in public beheading and mutilation.

if it wasn't for their wealth, they would be global outcasts!

What's worrisome is that the Saudis might just listen. They won't behead him. They will just crucify him.

How are the American Republicans going to spin the heat away from Saudi (whom they love for oil), when they "crucify" a Muslim...? The religious right (being neither religious nor right in any sense of the word) are going to be quite upset a Muslim is going the same way Jesus and Saint Peter did......

This will be interesting to watch.

Actually, if they were really serious about making the news, they would first stone him then crucify him and follow that by a simple beheading. Nice people.bah.gif

hang on, isn't Saudi Arabia chairman of the UN Human Rights Council

Again, take solace in the knowledge that their finite source of wealth, oil, is tumbling in price and will one day run out.

Let's see how many friends they have to defend them THEN!

The west is hypocritical. It will overlook crimes like these with nations that provide for them in some way.

General Prayuth...... see how easy it is.... The Saudis don't mess about.!! whistling.gif

I think its time Saudi Arabia fell into line with the rest of the world and stopped its barbarous practices of punishment .

Saudis are no better than ISIS. A quantitive difference rather than a qualitative one.

Q In a civilised world, how is this barbaric type of punishment allowed to happen? A -Oil

Q How can a civilised world condone such an act by its non-interference? A -Oil

Q When will the civilised world say "Enough is enough, you can't carry on this way in this day and age"?.

A - When the oil runs out,

May be Bush can or should talk some sense into these barbaric friends of his.

Scary they still do this in 2015, among many other onerous things.

“Well, this is a very politically-motivated case and we can see that from even the punishment that has been allotted, not just the death sentence but the death sentence by crucifixion..."

Except they were also going to behead him first. So they expect him to survive the beheading, but not the crucifixion?

What do the Republicans have to do with this?

The President is, by Constitution, responsible for foreign relations so what is he saying or doing?

Isn't Obama a Democrat?
