US-trained Syrian rebels give equipment to al-Qaeda group

The United States military says Syrian rebels they have trained have given vehicles and ammunition to the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

Six pick-up trucks and about one-quarter of their issued equipment was handed over apparently in exchange for safe passage.

The US has trained rebels to fight militants from the group calling itself Islamic State (ISIL).

A statement issued by US Central Command (Centcom) said the report, if accurate, is concerning and a violation of Syria train-and-equip programme guidelines.

Centcom overseas military operations in the Middle East. It was told of the equipment surrender on Friday evening, according to the statement. Earlier the same day, a Centcom spokesman had said all weapons issued to the rebels remained under their control.

this seems to be a reoccuring problem when the usa gives weapons out to any group. Those weapons are used as cash and have to be replaced several times.

They would come out ahead giving out weapons manufactored to ''asian copy quality,'' blow up in face of user after firing 50 rounds. It really would make little difference in the long run, whose hands they blow up in. Most all groups the us supports are enimies to all other countries of the free world anyway.

Just look at the tens of thousands of young men running away to other countries.... Cowards !

Stand up and fight and die like a man. These cowards don't deserve freedom or even a helping hand. They want everyone else to do their dirty work and provide support.

US has tradition of this sort of stuff. Viet Nam war classic example. I.F. Stone reported that in 1964 US military captured 4,900 weapons from guerrillas but lost 13,700 weapons to them. The piddling amount reported in the story here is nothing compared to what Iraq army forgot to take with them when they ran like heck from ISIS. Like truthful joke at the time "Want an ARVN (South VN army) rifle? Never fired, only dropped once".

They are worrying about guidelines , America you need to wake up and smell the coffee.

There is a reason they call it 'the American Dream'.

The rest of the world is waiting for Isis to come knocking on there door first.

Actually isn't Russia moving ahead with more commitment than the US?

The report says that the arms were handed over in exchange for safe passage. "Your money (arms in this case) or your life?" They chose life.

a violation of Syria train-and-equip programme guidelines.

This would be laughable if it was not such a serious infraction and abuse of resources...

The Syrian debacle and failure with US involvement will only add to the Obama legacy of head shaking foreign policies...

Under the Obama administration...the US has become the laughing stock of the world...no one takes the US seriously anymore...

The Chinese, Russians and Iranians are taking fully advantage of the weakness projected by this administration...

^ Actually, Obama's mid-East policy is much better than bush's was:

Obama has wasted billions of dollars and alienated millions of people in the Middle East.

Bush wasted tens of billions of dollars and alienated tens of millions of people in the Middle East.

Perhaps the next president will only waste a few hundred million in the Middle East. facepalm.gif

Most countries mind their own business.

Yeah, maybe that is what the US should have done--in economic ways, for all the loans of assets and resources to most of the countries in the world-- in military ways, say in WWI, WWII, Korea, the Cold War, the desert wars--and in societal ways with the numerous humanitarian, health, educational and social projects all over the world.

Well, I am happy to see you realize your position. Wiggle your tails really fast and maybe next time we'll throw you a bone.

Yes, in all ways you should mind your own business. Your own Ron Paul says "Foreign aid is taking money from the poor people of a rich country and giving it to the rich people of a poor country", keep it, the money, the arms, the interventions, all of it.

But they made the Brits pay for their arms etc during WW2 even when they had their backs to the wall.

Are you sure you're not referring to the Anglo-American loan of 1946, for which the US gave the UK approx $3.75B at 2% for war reparations and was repaid $7.5B some 60 years later?

Much, if not most, of the lend-lease material for WWII was not repaid. "The Lend-Lease Act of March 11, 1941, was the principal means for providing U.S. military aid to foreign nations during World War II. The act authorized the president to transfer arms or any other defense materials for which Congress appropriated money to “the government of any country whose defense the President deems vital to the defense of the United States.” Britain, the Soviet Union, China, Brazil, and many other countries received weapons under this law. By allowing the president to transfer war matériel to a beleaguered Britain–and without payment as required by the Neutrality Act of 1939–the act enabled the British to keep fighting until events led America into the conflict. It also skirted the thorny problems of war debts that had followed World War I." http://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/lend-lease-act

Gee, I wonder what language your country would be speaking now if the US had minded their own business in the past.
