Hi all,

Last year when LOS we bought sim cards, but for the life of us can't remember what. We were there 1 month and I think from the time we topped up once when we bought the SIM (not sure how much), we didn't have to top up again.. great!

Can anyone advise me on what SIM to purchase? I think most can be purchased in the 7-11. Basically we just want data + some voice + some txt, we'll be there a grand total of just under 4 weeks, staying in Thailand all the time.

Pick one up at the airport right after the baggage claim when you walk ourside. They give it away for free, just need to top up. Would recommend True, best network.

That's brilliant, thanks. Is it possible to top up there-and-then? Found the 7-11 to be a bit of a nightmare last time!

Thanks again

A nightmare?

Ask for "topup True xxx Baht" (100, 200 ...).

You get a slip with a 14 digit code.

Then on the phone:

*123*<code>#<send button>

Thats it.

Similar with AIS, just another sequence (*120*...#).

So easy.

Many other options available like using the orange colored selfservice terminal at the outside of each Seven Eleven and other shops.

Thousands of those.

And service stations of every provider at the tourist hotspots.

I meant buying the SIM, was very hard to explain exactly what I wanted.

Funny though, last year I don't ever remember topping up, only once when we bought the SIM... must have been my imagination because all SIM's I see now seem to be 7 days... although they come with the 'Tourist' label. Aah, back in 2010 (not even long ago)... we didn't have mobiles with us, wi-fi was rare... got such a shock when we went back in 2014.

Depends what you need. The 7 days is just for the data component. The SIM itself will have at least 35 days of validity.

If you need data for a month rather than a week, you can obtain a normal SIM at the airport, choose the most appropriate package for your usage, topup(+ 7% VAT) and then apply the package via the printed USSD code.

That option is for Happy(DTAC)

For TRUE H here

Scroll through the options and make a note of the USSD code for the package that you want. Once they have activate and topped up the SIM for you at the airport, you can quite simply apply the package of your choice or shown them the code and let them tap it in for you.

ummmm I think you now have to register with passport the sim card......

Go to Terminal 21 , I think level 6 where the Movies are ,

all the phone companies are there , speak OK english , will sell you a sim and plan and make sure that it works for you........

I used DTAC last time for data only.....

Am going to try piggy-backing on this since seeking a recommendation with similar reqts:

- Friend has alrdy arrived, so getting sim at arpt not an option

- iPhone (uses iMessaging & Viber mostly)

- No need/intent to tether

- 30 days

- Mostly just data/internet use; limited voice-calling (but want to be able to top-up as desired)

- 4GB data probably more than enough

- Mostly around BKK; maybe an Isaan side-trip but nothing really remote

- DTAC pref since I have that, but not essential

Which prepaid sim to ask for and add-on dataplan to get. No renewability needed.

I think now they need a proof of résidence to register the simcard . Mandatory

Please do some research before you post , this is not true

You need to show your passport only and a copy is taken, I have used driving license in a 7/11

Sorry if it is not true but they ask that to 2 friends of mine when buying sim card in ais shop !!!

That would be insane and equivalent to just "cancelling" the entire tourist simcard market. I suspect you're talking about postpaid simcards & plans, which act like credit cards. I'm asking about prepaid cards. (Showing a passport will be no problem.)

When you land at Swampy, go to the AIS shop in arrivals, ask them for the Bt799 SIM card with 12Gb of data, and give them a Grand and ask them to use the rest as credit.

If by chance you do run out, you just go to any 7-11 and ask for "1-2-Call 200 baht" or whatever, and they give you a till receipt with the number on it.

Follow the instructions to type it into the phone, or ask the hotel receptionist to do it for you.

I can't vouch for calls or texts, but that is ample video to shoot photos and videos for a month, and upload them to Facebook, for example.

And you can check data or balance left at any time with a code.

And I've found AIS has the best coverage.
