BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court today issued a warrant for the arrest of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra after he failed to show up at the court to face a trial which he was accused of defaming the former army chief in May this year.

The former Army commander-in-chief Gen Udomdej Seetabutr filed a defamation suit against Thaksin for giving press interview in South Korea via YouTube and online news media during May 19-22 This year accusing him of favouring Myanmar-style democracy and also attacking the Privy Council and the Army in a damaging way.

At today’s hearing of testimonies, the Army representative, Maj Gen Sarayut Klinmahom, director of the Office of the Judge Advocate, appeared in the court to give testimony, but without the presence of the defendant Thaksin Shinawatra.

The court then issued warrant of arrest for Thaksin to stand trial in the case.

However the court also ordered that the trial be temporarily suspended until the defendant is arrested and brought to the court for trial.

Criminal Court issues arrest warrant against Thaksin
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court Monday issued an arrest warrant against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra after he failed to show up for a court session in a defamation lawsuit filed against him by the Army.

Thaksin's lawyer told the court that the former prime minister has received a political asylum and living abroad so he could not appear in the court.

The court then issued the arrest warrant and suspended the case pending Thaksin's arrest.

The Royal Thai Army filed the defamation lawsuit, saying Thaksin had damaged its reputation by giving interview on YouTube and other online media from May 19 to 22.

The court scheduled Monday's hearing for both sides to examine each other's evidences.

They had one to begin with? The clown show continues, they really are such a sensitive bunch this Army, how they'd ever cope in a time of real conflict amuses me.

So how many arrest warrants are now in force?

Any country, other than Thailand would be investigating ways / methods of extraditing a criminal - especially when you know where the bolthole is and said criminal is flitting around the world more than likely into countries that have extradition agreements with Thailand.

Another slow news day.

Maybe because these countries just don't give a rats arse about what Thailand wants under its current guise?

If the truth be known, it's more than likely Thailand doesn't really give a rats arse what Thaksin is doing, and the further away he is the better.

As for his name popping up all the time - not entirely a function of the junta -- the news media thinks it sell papers and will take every opportunity to run headline.

It's hard to understand why he couldn't be simply arrested in any of the countries where he regularly visits....

charge him with the 3000 odd extra judicial murders and maybe some country might agree to send him back..

Every article published about him in recent weeks is due to conflicts with the junta. And they then pass this onto the press, the press are heavily sanctioned these days, the sacking of the PBS team who apparently refused to air a junta propaganda piece, and the Nations reporter tells most people that the junta are behind his name kept up there, and not the press.

You're right though, Thailand doesn't give a rats arse, the junta, however do ;)

They might indeed, but the trouble with that plan is that he could likely bring down an awful lot of important people with him - it wasn't him that pulled the trigger, nor do I imagine he personally authorised each and every death. That means people in the dock with him.

No, I imagine he has far too much dirt on far too many for him to ever be allowed to stand trial on any charges other countries would actually send him back to face, hence no requests for his arrest.

Defendant Number One, KTB case too long ago for you?

Mr T won't come back unless it is safe to do so. He will have one of his "private" governments in power, democratically elected of course, and amnesty in place to absolve his various sins.

He will then enter Rome Bangkok as a hero, and the roads will be strewn with red rose petals, and the sidewalks packed with adoring red tee shirts.

He will spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder. thumbsup.gif

The problem with that, is that he would defend himself by saying the accusations as politically biased and as such, most countries wouldn't extradite him.

Kasit blagged the country by claiming he had gone to Interpol but that was all nonsense.

A great way to show you are serious about reconciliation in this country (not). Could you imagine this thin-skinned person leading men into battle - what a potato head!

At least the court had the good sense to temporarily suspend the trial, until the "defendant" is arrested and brought before it.

Wow, you wrote something I agree with.

Whatever next.

Just another charge to eventually expire under the 'statute of limitations' - a last resort, get-out clause written by dirty politicians.

"Another" arrest warrant? Then for sure he'll be arrested soon.

Seriously, I don't think the Thai government truly wants to try Thaksin and would prefer he never returns to Thailand. The last thing the government wants ... or needs ... is the whole world watching them prosecute the former dear leader. It would be a colossal distraction.

Indeed.

The criminal Thaksin Shiwattra is already a fugitive from a sentence for a conviction and has umpteen arrest warrants outstanding for some very serious charges e.g. the Krungthai Bank scandal, where others have been convicted and jailed.

Thaksin is afraid of the real meaty outstanding cases so is too scared to come back until they've all been conveniently whitewashed.

The judicial system and the government need to grow some - and extradite this criminal to face the courts, and his sentence, or ignore him and stop pretending that they really care about the law.

But, if they extradite Thaksin they might have to extradite others, like little Red Bull Boy and that would never do.

One more meaningless arrest warrant, that the keystone cops will never ever attempt to enforce,

Keeping Thaksin in the public eye is essential. Without him the junta could not justify their actions and existence.
