In my country such a crackdown would be decried as racist by the progressives. Actually one just was.

except the definition "Progressive" is self-defined .The loony liberal unintelligent

funnily enough, "liberals" are always bashed - in the USA, liberals are seen as similar to european socialists, while in Europe, socialists bash "liberals" as being too capitalist ! LOL

I can only assume that a lot of these people were from neighbouring countries who entered, and worked, here illegally.

I see a lot of African faces in the photos.

Is Africa a neighboring country now?

Perhaps these guys are members of West African football teams, here on holiday.

A week long crackdown that ended today, with more than 9000 arrested? How is it possible that nobody knew anything and that this story is only breaking now?

To find all these people who were charged, immigration surely had to have encountered enough legitimate foreigners in this crackdown that averaged more than 1000 arrests per day.

Where are more than 9000 being detained?

this is way to fishy a story . and how is it the starting and ending times of this round up are published ? are the police that shallow ? never heard of any crack down . where are the bad guys being kept ? they pay a tea money fine and were let go ? inquiring minds need to know .........................

There is a much better article on this subject in today's/25 Oct 15, 7:22pm, Bangkok Post titled, "Tough New Overstay Rules Go Before PM" which talks the crackdown and implementing 1, 5, or 10 year Thailand entry bans for overstays.

FWIW, I think the BKk Post article on this subject is pretty crap as well.

Zero mention of how/where the authorities are detaining 9000 people supposedly arrested in one week. And likewise, zero mention of what's going to become of them in the wake of their supposed arrests.

Is it too much for the dimwits to ask... Hey, what happened to all 9000 of them???

Immigrations crackdowns certainly seem to make a lot of TV regulars very excited and nervous.

Yes, because to actually get a number like 9000 that basically implies razzias and spot checks of papers everywhere. (That nobody heard about it while it was going on means that out of 9000 this is likely 8950 from a labor effort rounding up illegal workers, to which a handful were added from the unrelated interpol warrant for the Russian chick, plus a quick sweep of some African areas. And there you go.

Also it's from The Nation. They will have missed half of it, and from the remaining half got half of that wrong. Possibly the Little Africa sweep was one week. But who knows; again, it's The Nation.

When you cater to people who need to pay for sex, you get a lot of tourist who need to pay for sex.

Maybe that is why???

Or may be because people with money go to fun places, instead of farms in the middle of the jungle

Interesting comment,

but it can not be for me.

I have the means and time to travel wherever and whenever I desire.

But the sleazy sex pits of Thailand are not on my list.

Jesus.. This is about a 23 year old Russian chick and her boyfriend on the run. Where do you suggest they go? Somewhere where they stand out a lot more, or a very convenient place like Pattaya where there are already thousands of Russians living, visiting and being catered to?

Anyone with a bit of imagination out there can think of new words to replace "scumbags and quality tourists"? So "old hat and boreing" when wheeled out every time we have a story such as this.

It's not for me to ask why there are so many of this, or so many of that. It's not for me to call those arrested, various names and assign them labels.

Keeping my own affairs in order is my only business. It makes my life so much more enjoyable and less complicated.

They can catch the people when they go to do a 90 day stamp, a renewal, an extensions, an exit, etc. The officers are alerted to the fake stamp info. So the people who really never exited the country, they were told the only the passport had gone but maybe the passport never really left as well. So the entry stamp is fake and this would be consider entering illegally. If you consider how many people go to immigration or exit daily 9,000 may not be so hard to believe.

Doesn't make any sense to me at all. How is it that suddenly there are all of these people who have crossed into Thailand circumventing border crossings by being ferried across rivers in the middle of the night, mucking through swamps, slashing their way through the wilderness etc.?

That 9000 have been caught in seemingly one fell swoop suggests that Thailand is having a sort of Hungarian refugee crisis, that they are beseiged with people who are desperate to get here.

My guess is that either there was some shoddy translation and reporting with plenty of missing details or the police are not bothering to mention that the 9,000+ are in violation of a range of immigration laws.

Hmmmmm.....9000 people that need to Eat,sleep and drink...gonna be deported ..=. Gonna be a lot of Thai's getting no income!!!!

"Gonna be a lot of Thai's [sic] getting no income!!!!"

Another unfathomable comment. How many Thais would have to close their businesses or would get "no income" from employment because a bunch of people who didn't have the economic wherewithal to be in the country legally disappeared? There's 67 plus million people in Thailand and over 6 million in Bangkok and the ebb & flow of tourists who actually have money to spend isn't affected by this lot.

I guess extending your logic they should just throw open the borders and the good times would be sure to follow.

9,000 !!! BS ! That figure came from the same place that the mob that conducts the polls in Thailand gets them, out of someone's bum.

But regardless the figure I hope they close their TVF accounts when they deport them. biggrin.png

Some people will do almost anything to get a free t-shirt!gigglem.gif

I wonder what it costs for 9000 t-shirts?

I bet that you can buy a Tshirt on the soi now.

Maybe some clueless tourists will be spotted wearing them.

haha! whole busloads of Chinese..
