Anybody been charged or not charged for having excess baggage with Air asia by any chance???

I've about 30kg up against their 15kg policy, flying from Udon-Bkk-Xiamen in a few days. It'll cost me about an extra 3000B if they do.

Not that it'll make a blind bit of difference now that it's booked... but would still be interested if anyone has or hasn't.

Shall update this later on myself I s'pose.

My wife was 9 kilograms underweight on Air Asia today...

Nothing was said...honestly :o

Will they compensate her on the return... :D

Apparently it's 83baht/kg for a local flight but I got charged $4/kg in Hanoi to BKK (no receipt of course).

I mentioned the 83b, about $2.30, but the Vietnamese guy told me it's a different charge for international flights. They won't miss you, you'll have to pay.

I had 25 kilos in 2 bags at check-in plus heavy hand luggage for a domestic flight. The girl suggested I return when my checked luggage was 15 kilos so I wouldn't be charged for the excess.

Some rearranging and I managed to bring the 2 bags to just under 20 kilos with the rest in hand luggage like jdinasia suggested.

I had no problems with the even heavier oversize hand luggage. The lady checked both bags on without excess charges.

I've been sometimes charged and sometimes not charged when checking overweight bags on AirAsia. The weight policy seems hit and miss in Thailand and more strictly enforced in Malaysia.

Flew with my other half on Air Asia from BKK to Phnom Penh and Phuket to BKK this summer and had no problems.

Both had rucksacks weighing about 20kg, as well as mini rucksacks and bags for carry on.

No extra charges, no hassle about carry on. Can' complain at all.

I had 30kgs coming from an international flight and was prepared to pay the additional fee. I was told I had too much but would not be charged "this time"

Lucky day? Few people had luggage checked in.

Flew Tiger Air from Singapore to Chiang Mai today. Checked bag was just under the allowed fifteen kilograms. Hand bag was nine kilograms, i.e. a whole two kilograms over the allowed limit of seven. The check-in agent at Changi actually made me repack the extra weight into my checked bag (didn't subsequently get charged for what was then an overage). What a prick. The flight was maybe 40% full and that's being generous on the high side. I'me sure my enormous 2000 grams of extra cabin weight was going to make a huge difference.

Methinks you got lucky. My experience is that they'll generally let you skate with anything less than 20 kg, but over that amount and they often want you to pay (but as I said above, they're usually more strict overall in Malaysia).

:D I think it depends on how full the flight is. We have only ever been charged once and we were 4 kilo's over the limit, the flight was full though. Actually that is the only time I have ever seen an airdelaysia flight with no empty seats. It does seem a bit hit and miss and probably depends on whether the check in people have had their som tam that morning. : I've just thought of another reason we may not get charged, we have two young blonde daughters :o

:D We've never had a problem, as before, I suppose it depends on how full the flight is. I have seen some tourists with enourmous rucksacks :o . Silly buggers, mostly the luggage arrives as soon as you reach the baggage hall - certainly in Chang Mai, Phuket and krabi. Coming back to Bangkok it could take as long as ooooooooooooh 10 minutes or so.

below 20 kgs within thaiairasia is ok. if you flying from malaysia, you are going to be charged for anything above 15kgs. period. no exceptions. its almost 160baht per kilo international out of malaysia.

kurgen, yes you can carry hand luggage on board.

I'd recommend just looking for a passenger without any checked luggage and ask them if you can check in together. They should pool the luggage allowance for both of you together, and just be sure you get the ticket stubs for the bags. People do this all the time to avoid paying excess baggage charges.

Airasia were pricks about everything, not just the excess baggage. The first flight was cancelled so everything had to be delayed by a day without any reimbursement options or Hotel costs or anything.

Bags were 17 kg over

Cost of flight Udon Thani - Bkk THB1200. Excess Baggage fee THB1400

Cost of flight Bkk - Xiamen THB3500. Excess Baggage fee THB2400

A total of THB3800 in excess baggage alone, wot's that, about 100 US Dollars for just the extra 17 kilo's in my baggage.

Of course it did mention all this when I booked them... but still, 100 bucks.

That's why I avoid using the budget carriers when I know that I will be flying "heavy". I'll plunk down for a full-fare ticket on THAI or MAS in those instances as the excess baggage charges can easily equal/exceed the price of a ticket on the more expensive carriers.
