Last month while in the USA I had a eye checkup and the Ophthalmologist suggested that soon I should start taking eye vitamins and she recommended AREDS 2 Formula, eye vitamin & mineral supplement. She said that I do not have macular degeneration but by taking this mineral supplement now it will significantly delay getting MD later. She recommended PreserVision Eye Vitamin & Mineral Supplement, AREDS 2 Formula, Mfg by Bausch & Lomb. I was able to buy this product at WalMart. 120 soft gels for $31.00. The dose is 2 per day so that would be a 2 month supply. My question is if anyone knows if this product or similar is available here in Thailand and the price?

The product you seek does not appear to be available in Thailand or anywhere in the region.

As the product is patented you are unlikely to find anything similar.

You could have the product posted to you from the States.

I have had macular degeneration, the wet form, in one eye. Had a series of Avastin injection directly into the eyeball at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.

Have also been taking daily doses of either Blackmores Lutein or Marigold Plus which contained Lutein as well as other vitamins/supplements.

Both are available at Fascinos and probably at many other pharmacies ... the Blackmore product in several varieties.

Can't say whether or not they are effective, but the degeneration has halted and there has been some improvement in the affected eye and no problems have developed in the "good" eye. First diagnosed and treated over 6 years ago and still doing quite well.

While the specific product is not available the ingrediants might be. Why don't you list out what is in it?

Here are some pics of the box/ingredients.

If I can't find a similar product locally then I will have my son send this to me from the USA.

Constituents of the AReds 2 formula are..........

500 mg vitamin C
400 iu vitamin E
10 mg lutein
2 mg zeaxanthin
80 mg zinc
2 mg copper
REF.

"10 mg lutein

2 mg zeaxanthin"

And these important supplements are available in Thailand via the Marigold and Blackmores products mentioned in my post above.

Triple Therapy with Zeaxanthin Lessens Burden of Treatment for Wet AMD

Posted in: Health and Nutrition, Latest News, Research and Developments

As far back as 2007, triple therapy for wet (neovascular) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was shown to be superior to mono therapy (intraocular injection of a single anti-VEGF drug).* And now, a study described in a recent online publication of the peer-reviewed monthly, International Journal of Retina and Vitreous, found that triple therapy supplemented with oral zeaxanthin is even better. Scientists found that a combination of intravitreal Avastin, photodynamic therapy with verteporfin, intravitreal corticosteroids, and ingestion of 20 mg of the carotenoid, zeaxanthin, had potentially groundbreaking results. Of particular note was the finding that the addition of oral zeaxanthin dramatically increased the benefits.

My eye doctor here in Bangkok put me on alcon vitalux plus which is simular and you can buy in most pharmacies.

Just warning about Vitalux, if anyone is a smoker, it not supposed to be used.... I forget the reason why now....

I am not sure about the other products mentioned above, but I use 81 mg aspirin which has helped me for a few years now....... as prescribed by my optician thumbsup.gif

Are you sure you are taking aspirin for MD? For wet MD believe it would be a serious concern and for anyone with MD the weight of less chance of heart attack against more bleeding has to be a serious consideration from my understanding.

Aspirin is well known and widely prescribed blood thinner to help prevent artery blockage - so yes it may well help your heart - but wet type of MD a bleeding issue and that is a well known negative of aspirin usage.

You are aware that opticians are not physicians - they make and fit lens. No reason for them to be more reliable than me or other unknown posters here on forum. Please see a qualified ophthalmologist (it is very cheap here) and confirm what you are using is appropriate and if there might be something better. You do not want to make mistakes with your eyesight.

OK that is the word I meant to use ...ophthalmologist ....facepalm.gif The first ophthalmologist I saw here, prescribed the Vitalux, I was soon told not to use by my SIL because I smoke!

He's since left Samui too...

It also thins the blood elsewhere in the body.... It's worked for me and I am not changing....smile.png
