Accident Chinese Boy, 8, Drowns While Swimming on Phi Phi Island
Picture courtesy of Khaosod of the body being transported. An eight-year-old Chinese tourist drowned while holidaying with his father at Phi Phi Island, Krabi, 23 August. The boy, identified as Xiao, had been visiting the island on a tour package with his father. After lunch at a bungalow resort near Ao Tonsai, the pair went to Arida Beach. At around 13.55, the father allowed his son to play in the sea, despite knowing that the boy could not swim. The child entered the water equipped only with a snorkelling mask and breathing tube, but without a life jacket. Minutes later, the father realised he could no longer see his son or the snorkelling equipment and rushed to search both onshore and in the water. At around 14.05, the child was found unconscious in the sea and taken to Phi Phi Hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at 15.18. The boy’s body was later transferred by Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers, by boat, to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have notified the Chinese embassy.
