It's banned in areas where Loy Krathong is being celebrated.

If want to drink, go somewhere else.

If want to take part in Loy Krathong celebrations accept you have to do it sober...or at least no drunker than when you arrive.

It's hardly the end of the world.

It just about covers places like Phitsanulok where the Nan runs right through it.

It is treating the public like children once again and damping down the occasion for toutists at the same time IMO.

If drunks act like children they deserve to be treated like children.

You want to drink? Don't go to events where it is banned.

So in Pattaya is Beach rd, Walking st and Bali Hai banned because in the 12 or Loy Krathongs that I have done in Thailand were in those areas and they made a point of celebrating it including involvement by Mayors etc.

:)

Ask the organisers. I'm sure they know.

Everybody just assumes that "to drink is to get drunk". Not necessarily so. Most people just have a few beers and enjoy the fun of the festival.

Most folks can handle their toddies. Some small subset can't, and cause havoc for everyone. Until they can differentiate in advance, the only way to avoid the historical havoc is to ban everyone. Sucks, but that's the way it is. BTW, I don't agree or disagree with it. But not my country, not my rules, not my place to judge.

Unfortunately, this Loi Kratung is on a Wednesday, so here in Pattaya the beaches are "closed for cleaning". (Except nobody NOBODY cleans them on Wednesday). Every year the concessionaires have lovely parties on the beach and everybody had fun. This year, the "authorities" have decided that because it's "cleaning day", no parties will be permitted. One big party of the year, and they <deleted> it up.

Every year, all over the world they move holiday celebrations around weekends. You can blame the authorities for screwing it up, or you can move the party to a day the beach is open. One of them achieves the desired result. Question is, which one?

Really?

Because I happen to believe that drunken morons spoiling events that may include families with children is a bad idea that makes me a supporter of totalitarian rule?

Because I can accept that there are times when drinking is perfectly acceptable and others when it is not that makes me a supporter of totalitarian rule?

Because I feel if you want to drink you should avoid events where it is banned that makes me a supporter of totalitarian rule?

What a strange world you do live in.

I think harassing people while drunk is already forbidden. So we speak about not drunk people who enjoy a glass of something at the celebration.

Yes it it is totalitarian.

No it's not.

No one is forcing those who want to drink to go to these events. If you want to go you accept the rules.

harassing people is forbidden. And you can make a law that forbid to be obvious drunk.

of course you can ban, drinking, eating, short trousers, flip flops, fat people, but what for?

Booze always on sale at our local temple grounds during Lou Krathong, can't see this year being any different.

Temples have immunity, the religious analogue of diplomatic immunity.

If you can't stay without getting drunk and if it's important for you to be seen drunk....shame on you. Stay at home and drink there. Nobody will disturb you.........and YOU will not disturb anybody. Your true colors you'll see next morning in your mirror..!

I'm really getting a strong impression that key members of the government are serious teetotalers and generally not keen on having any fun.

They may ban booze 365 Days of the year, no more drunk drivers, less crime, less domestic violence, less fights, less drunken idiots boring you to death with stupid tales they repeat over and over again, less people dying a horrible death through Alcoholism.

It would actually make sense.

Yes! Ban the booze. I am all for it.

Their idea of fun is having authority over people and making up rules for them to obey.

First it is not about me....I don't go to silly festivals and most probably I wouldn't drink something there, as they wouldn't have wine and the Thai beer is too ugly to drink. As well I am into fitness and can't get drunk as it would hinder my training.

So you can save the personal attack for someone else....I am not a juicy target.

Just different than you, I don't want to live in a world full of laws and guards executing them. I am old enough to decide myself what I do. Laws that prevent harm from others are already in place...only need to execute them. And some drunks are the least problems we have currently. Drunks at least don't shoot non believers (non drinkers??).

Usually it is the people who had to stop smoking and stop drinking who don't want to grant others their enjoyment. Too much jealousy on this planet.

religious fanatics are always similar....don't matter what invisible friend they have. They don't care about living their religion, they care about forcing others to their believes.

Nothing changed the last few thousand of years. Just in the west we always think that Buddhism is different.....

Other dangerous drugs are banned, that doesn't stop people taking them, but other dangerous drugs are not available in supermarkets and socially acceptable, if Cannabis is illegal, how is a dangerous drug like Alcohol socially acceptable and legal ?

..a semblance of morlity....or maintaining order.....

...surely people that drink will acquire it one way or another.....

....one early morning on a bus....I happened to glance into a half-open, still-dark shop.....

...I espied the shopkeeper duly filling an energy bottle from a Thai whiskey bottle....

...so there you go....next......

Drinking is banned during this event. Wearing short is banned in certain tourist attractions I could mention. We were not allowed to eat in church when I was a child, sure other places do not allow it. Equally dress codes in certain restaurants ban both shorts and flip flops and I'm sure other places do as well. There are rules for places and events, you don't like them, don't go.

Why you include fat people in the list is beyond me.

Even more reason to stay home, have a BBQ, light some candles in flower boats from the many roadside sellers on the day of, and piss it up with a few neighbors!

Some of these big Loy Krathong festivals are sponsored by the breweries, ours in town was by Leo last year. I'm sure the General will be receiving the odd phone call about this.

ban booze sales in areas where the Loy Krathong festival will be celebrated

I don't know what that means. Isn't Loy Krathong celebrated right across the Kingdom ? Or for better wording, should they say where there is a major public event ? Where there will be plenty of falang (or SEA) visitors, and the authorities (read fun-police), can stuff it up for them. Publish the list of areas so that I can totally avoid them.

Don't ban booze, ban those bloody squirt guns, of all descriptions.

Posted

Fair enough. Loy Krathong isn't really about having a piss up, is it?

You are right SoiBiker, but to a lot of idiots on visas here every event is a reason for a piss up.Hell it is hard for them to think of a reason to start trouble with out blaming it on the piss..DJ

Yeah but...... Imagine them trying to ban booze where Songkran is celebrated, like the entire city of Pattaya.

I wouldn't put it past them.
