I'm a US citizen. I'd like to use a visa service in the US to get a tourist visa for Thailand. I want to get it in February, but not enter Thailand until June. Is this possible?

Since you're on now from the Thai Embassy Washington DC:

***A visa becomes effective from the date of issuance***

Validity of a visa: The Validity of a visa is 3 months.

Correction from Wash DC

So you must enter Thailand before 90 days of issuance from that embassy. I don't think it's likely you'll find a longer validity elsewhere

However if you are asking if there is a 'visa service' who can arrange for a post-dated visa, that is outside my purview.

The visa will come with an "enter before" date. That date will be 3-months from the date of issue for a Single Entry, or 6-months from the date of issue for the new METV. But bottom line is, the visa is useless to enter Thailand after that "enter before" date.

This policy forces you to try to "put off" getting your visa to the last minute, hopefully without train-wrecking the trip by not getting the visa back before your flight leaves. Check the policy of the consulate where you will apply as to how long their processing takes, and then add a bit of leeway to be on the safe side.

you don't have to wait till the last minute, do it within the 90 days

6-months from the date of issue for the new METV

Will I be able to get one of these in February, and can I use it for a single entry if I want to?

Yes, if you qualify, and if you are willing to pay the extra cost for the 6-month Multi-Entry visa (US $200), vs a Single Entry. There are more qualifications for the METV - See here:

Where will you be in the April to May timeframe? In many countries, it is easy to get a single entry tourist visa.

Also, if you only intend to stay in Thailand for a short period, consider coming here on a visa exempt entry. For short trips, that is a hassle free solution.

whistling.gif While I don't wish to disagree with the Thai embassy in Washington a tourist visa is not always valid for 90 days.

Often it may be 180 days.

At any rate it should be clearly marked on the visa when you get it.

There should be a date marked as "Must enter before" ((date )).

That "Must enter before date is the last date you may use that visa to enter Thailand.

You can't always believe the people at the Thai embassy to give you correct information.

They just work there.

March - Taiwan

April - Ukraine

May - Japan

I'll be in Thailand for 3 months, so an actual tourist visa is more convenient, and I'd rather avoid a border run if possible.

  • You can't get an SETV from Japan.
  • Don't know about the Ukraine.
  • I think you can get a SETV from Taiwan. The visa is valid for 3 months from issue so as long as you applied for the visa in Taiwan within 3 months of your entry to Thailand it would work. You can enter on the last day of the visas 3 month validity and still be granted a 60 day stay that can be extended by another 30 days at immigration for 1,900 baht.

Taiwan would do the visa. If you will be entering within 3 months after it issued. See: http://www.tteo.org.tw/main/th/services/5202/56235-Tourist-Visa-(TR---Single).html

There is no embassy in Ukraine. But there is a honorary consulate.

Royal Thai Honorary Consulate in Kiev
Ukraine, 02140 Kiev, 12A Bajana ave. Clinic "Boris"
Tel: +38 044 502-29-83
Fax: +38 044 502-80-40
Honorary Consul: Mr. Mykhajlo Radoutsky

Japan will only do them for residents.

Suggestion: give the embassy your travel itinerary and ask them if on this basis they will give you in February a single-entry tourist visa with a validity of six months.
