Two Thai writers win ASEAN Young Writers Award

BANGKOK, 15 December 2015 (NNT) - The Office of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has held an award ceremony entitled ‘ASEAN Young Writers Award’ to promote reading among Thai youths.

According to Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the award ceremony also celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Southeast Asian Writers Award and Bangkok’s latest title as the 13th book capital of the world. The title was given by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Young writers in ASEAN were able to submit their short stories either in their native language or in English. One of the judges, Mrs. Suraphipan Chatraporn, said more than 1,400 short stories were submitted.

Two writers from Thailand, Mr. Worapol Thawornwaranon and Ms. Cherntawan Sunwanpanich, were among the award-winning writers recognized at the contest. Mr. Worapol won an award for his short story in Thai, while Ms. Cherntawan for her English language story titled ' Daliyah Everlasting'. Both their stories will later be published as part of an anthology of the award-winning stories.
