Nana.... A terrible place to live

Was on Soi 4 a few weeks ago and it was time to fly back to Phuket.

Flagged down 3 taxis and none would use the meter.

Said it was 500 baht to Don Muang.

Lo and behold, a cop was walking down the street.

So, I asked him: "since when won't the taxi drivers use the meter anymore?"

He flagged one down (traffic was slow, the guy didn't have much choice), and pointed at me and said: "Don Muang, Meter!"

I got in, the guy went 2 or 3 blocks to near the Nana BTS station, stopped the car and said: "GET OUT!"

I went up the BTS, steps, bought a ticket to Mo Chit (43 baht) and took the airport bus for 30 baht.

Took me about 40 minutes total.

<deleted> those taxi drivers.

I'm trying to think of the last time I saw a cop walking down the street in Bangkok.

No, they are always on motorbikes, in pairs, Thais are not known for their love of walking.

That area used to be great many years back when it had the rickety rackety permanent street bars, and it wasn't over run with Africans causing trouble.

They don't anywhere near as much trouble as the fat, filthy white paedophiles checking out the kiddie porn DVDs being offered for sale on the stalls or the drunken white desperadoes who think it's ok to grope any woman walking by.

booked for 3 nights hotel on soi7/1 cant wait, love a few nights around nana at the end of my holiday,of course its a dump one day they will pimp it up and it will be sanitized and become a mall but not yet please.

I bet you that place makes more money for Bangkok than any of those shopping malls.

Are you on drugs or something?

No but you are most certainly a fool who was attracted to Thailand due to being unable to get a bunk up back home.

And i've never seen any kiddy porn in Nana, you must have really been looking out for it you vile individual.

Nothing but cheap name-calling to fall back on, eh?

You slag off Africans here, gays and Eastern Europeans in the other thread. . . what a charming little piece of work you are. Bet your mum's real proud

Years ago I used to work out of Pacific Place 1 and 2 and go along Soi Nana to eat at Chequers or the Swiss place just before it. I used to play in a Thai darts team out of Washington Square and we played in a few places in and around Nana. I haven't been there for 2 or 3 years but I used to go to the Bus Stop for lunch as I really enjoyed their fish and chips. I don't even know if it is still there and open anymore.

Bus Stop and Chequers still there, not sure about the "Swiss Place" but the Heidelberg, Jools and TheTavern all still alive. Thank you for bringing the subject up, there are still decent eateries and boozers about in Nana. I have never been a fan of the Plaza or the raucous, girlie bars at the top of the Soi but I like the vibe and the liveliness of the place. It is changing all the time, the percentage of white, western males there has gradually reduced over time and will probably continue to do so. The numbers of middle eastern and Indian sub-continent types no doubt will continue to grow. Some will think this a good thing, others not.

How terrible it is to live in Nana, written by people who have never lived in Nana. How less credible can this thread get?

Yes no one who has spent less than twelve months without leaving the Soi should be allowed to comment.

We've been...it stinks and is full of every kind of undesirable imaginable.

If I were looking to buy a condo I'd look at the street and run Forrest run.

I don't think you'll be making much money with your investments.

After 3 months in BKK (On Nut, not even the sex district) I realized that I could never live in that concrete jungle.

Next I gave Bang Saen a try for 2 months, but thought it was not much different from BKK - yet friends from Pataya kept telling us how wonderful Bang Saen was, it's beach and relaxed atmosphere.

I was ready to go back home.

Then my wife talked me into going to her home village in Chanthaburi.

Jungle, fruit trees, poor internet, no Farangs, actually few Thais too, mountain view, 20 km to the next restaurant, market at 7 km.

And I lived happily ever after!

It beats me why you have to tell everybody??

Softly, quietly, please.

I certainly took note..., cheers.

Why would you want to see absolutely everything even if you know some of it doesn't appeal to you?

I know the sewers must lead somewhere, but I have no desire to visit the sewage works just to say I've seen them.

Not myself personally..., but some people like to have the free choice..., and personally(and yes, maybe rather simplistically) I support people having free choices.

Totally. I'm sure some would choose not to do some of the things I do here. But we're all beautiful unique snowflakes.

Cypress Hill you obviously see what you want to see (or possibly just repeat what you want to hear), Soi 4 does not pretend to be a Mayfair art gallery, it is what it is, but there are many worse places in the world.

I have never been aware of kiddy porn there, or groups of paedos - they would not be tolerated by the majority who appear to be hetero males out for a drink and possibly take a lady back later.

Neither have I ever seen drunks openly and publicly groping women, though I would be surprised if it has never ever happened. And everybody who has a drink is not automatically classed as a drunk just because he drinks in Soi 4. I have never seen any street violence there, I have always felt safe enough, though again I would be surprised if it has never ever happened.

  • 3 months later...

"Today while waiting for a bus to get back home I saw a bunch of Thai ladies flagging a cab and getting flat out refused by I'd say 80% of the drivers".

That 80% figure is meaningless without knowing how many taxis were involved.

"If you are an Indian customer it's much worse. You'd have to negotiate the price."

Says who? Did you witness the much worse situation of Indians having to negotiate the price? Why is it much worse for Indians to have to negotiate than Thai girls?

I have seen severe racism against Indians in Bkk. One example: I went to one of those money changer windows on the street on SUkumvit. I changed a 100 dollar traveler's check. No problem, quick and easy. Behind me was an Indian man. He was well dressed and very polite, almost self effacing. When I was finished with my transaction and the Indian stepped to the window, the woman inside simply pretended he was not there. He politely spoke to get her attention, she still acted as though he was invisible. She just looked down at her paperwork, and scribbled on it as though there was nobody at the window.
