Desert Island Discs

Featured Replies

In the UK we have a radio programme called 'Desert Island Discs'. It's been running since 1942. Every week a new guest is invited and the premise of the programme is that the guest is going to be stranded on a desert island which already has a copy of the Bible and the complete works of Shakespeare on it. The guest has to choose 8 music tracks, one book and one luxury that they want to take with them. They also have to choose which single piece of music they'd want if the only had one choice.

My music:

Heard it through the grapevine - Marvin Gaye

The way you do the things you do - Temptations

People get ready - Impressions

Art thou troubled? from Handel's Rodelinda sung by Kathleen Ferrier

Cara sposa - From Handel's Rinaldo sung by David Daniels

Turn, turn, turn - Byrds

Blue bayou - Linda Ronstadt

One day I'll fly away - Randy Crawford

If I could only have one I'd choose 'Art thou troubled' by Handel.

My book would be the 'Alexander Trilogy' by Mary Renault - bit of a cheat as it's 3 books (Fire from Heaven/The Persian Boy/Funeral Games) but they have all been published in a single binding.

My luxury would be a bottle of Penfold's Grange that was never empty :o

How about you?

Really interesting thread. My choices would change day to day, however, today:

Talking Heads, probably their '77 album because of Psycho Killer.

David Bowie, tough one this, Hunky Dory wins it!

Thin Lizzy, Jailbreak.

Leonard Cohen, Songs of Love and Hate.

Neil Young, Harvest.

Now for the 'posh' stuff...

Handels Messiah.

Mozart's Requiem.

Something minimilist - Steve Reich, Six pianos.

The one I'd have to choose is Handel.

Now the book is even tougher, I have a love of the Bible and Shakespere and that would satisfy most of my needs so something easygoing and fun, if I can have a complete works, how about Spike Milligan!

Luxury, like the op, a life time supply of a good wine like Sauvignon Blanc - can I add in a life time supply of cigars? Hey it's a bit of fun, why not!

Anyone else?
