Is the road tax supposed to get cheaper every year?

Featured Replies

I just paid my annual road tax (Mitsu Triton) at the Transport Dept. (Pattaya), cost 4800 baht, same as the first year. I thought I remembered on the blue book of my old Isuzu D Max that the road tax came down a bit every year and at the end of the 7th year it was less than 3000 baht. Anyone know if it's supposed to reduce?

It takes a few years until discount... for my SsangYong with blue plates it is still the same after 9 years, the Opel Astra (black plates) got cheaper after 5 years.

Thanks. I can expect a discount in another 4 years then.

Never heard of reduction in yearly tax, but I think the longest / older car I ever had was about 10 years

I know I paid less for my 8 year old D Max than I do for my new Triton.

I just went in today to pay my road tax. This is the 6th year and the first time it was reduced. First 5 years it was the same. There is a point, maybe 10 years, where it stops being reduced. That was based on my previous car which was 3 years old when I got it.

What's the logic for reducing the tax...You still have a vehicle using the road no matter how old it is. It's not like insurance, where the replacement value of the vehicle goes down so the cost to insure does as well.

It drops a lot over the years. I paid:

Year

1 = 8,952

2 = 8,952

3 = 4,476

4 = 4,476

5 = 4,476

6 = 4,028

7 = 3,580

8 = 3,133

9 = 2,686

10 = 2,238

11 = 2,238

12 = 2,238

I didn't have the car for year 1 and 2, but I know it was a company car, so that could be the reason for the higher tax.

Yes, my 11 year old Fortuner has enjoyed a steady reduction in annual road tax since the 5th year. Surprising since, as one post (above) points out the same wear and tear takes place. But then, TiT.

referring to #8:

I am a bit confused by your table plus description.

Rate drops 10% from the full rate after year 5 as other already wrote.

A full rate of 8952 Baht would be a 3513 ccm engine?

Bet your next rate will be constant.

The reduction ends at 50% of the full rate.

10% off the full rate from year 6 to 10.

Two door pickups (green on white plate) have a constant tax based on empty weight.

Might be the key?

(two door and the 2.5 door tongue.png )

Tax rate for a personal car (Toyota Vios of daughter), new in 2547 (2004).

Ful rate for 1st to 5th year.

10% off the full rate for year 6 to 10.

Constant (50% of full rate) after that.

OK scan is outdated, too lazy to redo with more 822 Baht entries (2014 / 2015).

What are you on about? It does go down after 5 years, read the posts.

Well if you think Rd tax in the UK is associated with the cost of building Rds and using them perhaps you can believe this.

It is a tax, and people who like to drive new cars pay more, in a presumption that they can afford to. I actually think it is a good idea despite older cars likely being more polluting.

It is rather complex here....

Yes, it is. Double tax for company cars.

A new car tax system has been introduced this year....how it affects older cars. I'm not sure.

Under the old system pickups were tqxed on number of doors and engine size. This was then reduced as time went by. - see above

Road tax has not changed, a new excise tax has been introduced on all new vehicles, based on

carbon dioxide emissions, E85 compatabilty, fuel efficiency and engine size.

When you pay your road tax you get a receipt giving your vehicle details and the amount of road tax paid that year, the very bottom of the receipt it will give the date next tax due and the amount.

On a 3L Vigo double cab I paid 6828 Baht, this year the truck is 5 years old and the tax due is 6145.20 Baht.

My 17 year old Soluna cost 1,647baht in years 1-5, then reduced every year to year 10, when it was 50% at 823baht

It has remained at that price ever since

It amazes me that even with an age discount, charges do not go up every year in line with inflation.

Motorbike tax was 100baht 30 years ago and still is. Surely cannot do the paperwork for that small amount.

Paper and gov't workers are both pretty cheap :D
