BANGKOK: -- Thailand's instant noodles sale has dropped to record low in 44 years.

According to Mr Vathit Chokwatana, vice president of the Sahapat Group, Thailand’s largest consumer good manufacturer, instant noodle market felt its lowest fall in 44 years with its sale of “Mama” noodles grew a mere 0.4%.

This figure was even lower than the lowest 1% growth of the previous year, he said.

He attributed main reason for the steep fall to the shrinking purchasing power of its core customers, the grass root people, falling farm prices which forced them to turn to other cheaper food instead, such as white rice in smaller packs.

He said the company set growth sale target for instant noodles at 5% but could achieve only 0.4%.

Previously the growth forecast of Mama instant noodles was based on economic growth which it earlier set at 5-6% in the case of economic slowdown.

But now sales target has to be adjusted down from 0-1%, and that more marketing campaign would be needed to boost sale, he said.

He said Mama held two major campaign to stimulate sale last year by hiring well-known celebrities such as Um Patcharapha as presenter.

This could help to boost up to 7% growth in one month, he said.

He said Mama is no longer an economic indicator as some said when the country was hit by bad economy during the past two years, sales of Mama also was bad though it was sold at only 6 baht per pack.

But he said sale of Mama cups which fit the lifestyle of new generation could maintain its 8% growth and now could capture up to 54% of noodle cup market.

I LOVE MAMA

Then try the indo-mee....costs 14-15 baht but it's not a soup.

Also i saw many more pad-thai style noodles recently, from Singapore, Malaysia...they are nice but Indo-mee is the best....The singapore noodles are without msg and more spicy. Just put them in hot water untill they are al-dente (not too soft) and then add the baggy's of spices. You can also fry them again later with saucages and a fried egg on top. alloy maak maak.

On KLIA-airport in the supermarket they have loads of that style noodles, while visa-running i like to fill my bag with them.

The OP title: Mama instant noodle sale drops to record low in 44 years

The OP article: "According to Mr Vathit Chokwatana, vice president of the Sahapat Group, Thailand’s largest consumer good manufacturer, instant noodle market felt its lowest fall in 44 years with its sale of “Mama” noodles grew a mere 0.4%."

"He said the company set growth sale target for instant noodles at 5% but could achieve only 0.4%."

So it was the lowest year-on-year growth in sales in 44 years.................not the lowest sales (volume) in 44 years (which is what the title suggests).

Mama is a brand that has rejected innovation and improvement at every turn. When the trend is toward healthier, Mama has done NOTHING. Their noodles are still fried, and loaded up with too much salt, and tons of MSG. Moroheiya, and some of the other brands are far, far superior products. Mama continues to embrace mediocrity, as if it was their mantra, with zero regard to health, or healthy alternatives. They deserve to lose market share. They are about as innovative as Thai Air and Prayuth.

What you are saying is patently untrue, and completely lacking in any sort of scientific backing. There are dozens of instant noodle products out there that are far healthier than Mama. Moro Heiya is just one example. Here is some info on the noodles, which are baked (not fried in very low quality oil, like Mama noodles) and the ingredients. Also no MSG, lower fat and salt, and more. There is a huge difference. Also, if you are willing to spend quite a bit more, to avoid having your life shortened by a low quality product like Mama, you can try some of the Prima Food noodle products out of Singapore like the Lakasa, or the Curry noodles. Again, noodles are not fried, no MSG, and really premium ingredients. Available at Tops Markets and Villa Markets. Really outstanding products. On a completely different level. Eat Mama if convenience and price are the highest priorities, but please don't try to justify it by saying all noodle products are the same. That is such load of unfounded nonsense. Please do some research if you care.

Moroheiya also known as mulukhiya or mallow leaf (Corchuros in Lat.) has been cultivated in Egypt since ancient times. Its fibers are spun into jute while its young shoots and leaves are harvested as a vegetable and used in traditional Egyptian dishes and stews. However not many people know that this seemingly humble plant has a very surprising nutritional value. As the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science reported, moroheiya contains great amounts of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibers in quantities that surpass most known vegetables and herbs.

Non fried noodle, No artificail colors, No preservative, No cholesterol, NoMSG. Try this noodle made with Moroheiya and keep your body healthy.

The feature of “GreeNoodle”

The word “instant” has always been associated with something rather poor in taste and bad for health, but now it doesn’t have to be. GreeNoodle while being quick and easy to prepare is a natural, healthy and delicious alternative to conventional instant noodles.

What makes “GreeNoodle” so special?

a) Made with unbleached and unprocessed wheat flour and organically grown Morohieya* – an exceptionally nutritious vegetable that contains more minerals, vitamins and dietary fibers than spinach, broccoli, or carrot. One serving of noodles contains 32% of Daily Values of dietary fibers, 20% of vitamin A and more!

Your living in the wrong place if you run around trying to avoid MSG and copious other amounts of salty crap in your favourite 10 baht noodles or 35 baht soup.

I actually like mama the most, maybe it is because they resisted all that health nonsense.

If innovation means dumbing down food to make it healthier, I am glad they don't innovate.

Oh and indeed the headline is not correct, they actually increased sales, it's the lowest growth. Not quite the same thing as lowest sales.

I'm more concerned about dying on the public highway than worrying about the content of instant noodles but whatever floats your boat,I'm glad our resident members take such an active and positive stance for the benefit of us all regarding the contents of noodles.

Thank you very much.

It's not nonsense. Hopefully the Thais are replacing Mama with more nutritious foods.

Such as super sponge like oil laden omelettes and 5 baht luk chine or pork balls for those more accustomed to the noodle market the latter seen outside every school next to the 10 baht a cup Coke stand.

Not necessarily. I always order my food without MSG or added sugar. They always comply. And in my opinion it tastes about the same. The only difference in taste I can detect is that the MSG taste a little bit saltier. One can always make an effort to be healthier, if it is something that is of meaning to you. I don't really do it to live to be super old. I do it to have the remaining years mean as much as possible.

I don't think so, BKK has a great offer of noodles and everything else from Asia. Also i can easy fly to all neighbouring country's to shop there.

We never eat noodlesoup for 35 baht, we love Ramen from hachiban 69 which is the best...probably has msg but who cares.

When i cook at home i won't use msg or it's in Indomee, there's also an Indomee for 25 baht with bbq-chicken flavour...no idea why that one costs much more.

We mix a lot of vegy and meat/chicken/saucage/egg through the indomee and that's a great dish. not salty. Some pickles on the side and it's a feast to eat.

In BKK there are several dry noodles for sale now in the luxe supermarkets, even Tops has them. Can't remember that i ate Mama and i don't eat those soups in a cup at all. Instant ramen is what my wife likes but we buy that in Isetan.

I consider Mama noodles as too low quality for me, i don't care for the price anyway. I also tried the Korean instant noodles for 70-80 baht but can't say they taste good. I hope there will be more food from neighbouring country's available here, Thai food is not my favorit, i like Indonesian more. Unfortunately my wife won't go to muslem country's but that's allright as long as she likes their food (which she does).

The bottom line is as mentioned above, mama are a big seller here,I'm made up for all the educated expats who know their healthy noodles from their not so healthy ones.

Sadly like everything else here the general population, the people who these statistics basically refer to couldn't care one jot about MSG content or anything else content for that matter,if our resident food critics could educate the locals as they do the expat community the kingdom would be a better place.

Don't forget to mention that them four spoons of sugar in the noodle soup is also relatively bad for ones health.

TTFN.
