Zika virus spread in Thailand unlikely

z.jpg

Bangkok, 5 February 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health has indicated it is unlikely the Zika virus will enter and spread through the Kingdom.

Department of Disease Control Adviser and Virology Expert, Dr. Prasert Thongcharoen, recently took part in a meeting to prepare measures against emerging ailments. Following the meeting, the adviser stated that there is only a low to medium risk of a Zika virus epidemic in the Kingdom as so far it has spread mostly only through mosquitoes with very few instances of sexual transmission suspected.

The Ministry of Public Health has erected 4 blockades against the illness ranging from virologist techniques to entomologist techniques. It is also monitoring the public for signs of the virus, especially newborns as the disease has been linked to abnormal development of fetuses. It has noted for those traveling back from risk areas that the illness itself is not dangerous and can be self-treated.

On an Omani man in Thailand found to be infected with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), ministry officials stated his overall condition is good and he only requires breathing assistance from time to time. Nonetheless, they asserted that precautionary measures should continue.

sexual transmission suspected.

The Ministry of Public Health has erected

The irony of word usage hehe

I fail to read the part about why it's unlikely to happen, but since he already said we are safe, why not just listen and believe...

Of course. Thanks for the update Thailand. The way you handle the Dengue virus gives me complete confidence that Zika will not be a problem for you.

(Same type of mosquito, right?)

Thailand has everything to make Zika a real problem.

The right mosquitoes.

Lack of immunity.

Loads of breeding ground.

The right climate.

Poor response to Dengue increase.

In a way - they are correct .

The virus exists in mosquitoes or in humans- there is no evidence that the virus can be found in other animals.

At the moment there has only been one case reported in the Kingdom.

So if you think about it- unlikely there will be an epidemic at the moment.

As I understand it Zika is spread by the same mosquito that transmits Dengue fever.

I guess its good to know that mosquito is not found here. whistling.gif

I am glad that he is so confident. However, please note his words. he says "only a low to medium risk of a Zika virus epidemic in the Kingdom". That right, he said epidemic - he did not say "no problem".

Also not that the United Kingdom has already ordered the spraying of all aircraft leaving places where there is Zika virus. They have done this at the recommendation of the WHO. However, I am sure Thailand will react if they have an epidemic, and not before.

Can you provide a link to this information?

Is it alleged the tourist contact the virus whilst in Samui ?

I've noticed that viruses don't respect borders.

You are wrong unless Dengue can be caught in Scotland !

That's because the mosquitos won't go to Scotland.

Dealing with mosquitoes Thai-style - yesterday our moo-baan was told the Teseban was sending a team of highly trained operatives and would fog all 62 houses. (We have had cases of dengue a year or so back.) All houses were instructed to leave gates open to allow access.

The show began at 9.45 when a pick-up cruised slowly up and down each soi spraying some fluid into the hedges. Then a guy cranked up the fogger whilst the other 7 sat down in the shade. After doing four or five gardens the poor guy had had enough and everyone got ready to leave. My wife askedwhat this exercise in futility was supposed to achieve. She was told this super fluid killed all insects within 35 metres of it being sprayed and the estate was now totally mosquito free.
