TCC Group to take over Big C operations in Thailand and Vietnam



BANGKOK: -- Big C Thailand confirmed on Monday that the TCC Group has taken over 58.56 percent of the hyper market operations in Thailand and Vietnam in a US$3.4 billion (121 billion baht) deal with France’s Casino Group.

Ms Rampa Kamhomchuen, chief financial officer and vice president for accounting of Big C Super Centre Plc, said Monday that Geant International BV, the major shareholder of Big C, entered into a deal to sell 484 million of its shares to TCC Group at 252.88 baht per share.

She said she expected an announcement about the deal to be made before the opening of the stock market. She added that the deal was expected to be completed within March 31. After the conclusion of the share sale deal, the TCC Group will be required to make a tender offer for Big C shares.

Big C is Thailand’s second largest hypermarket operator after Tesco Lotus.

Hopefully, they make an agreement with Casino Group to have access to the excellent and reasonably priced Casino branded food. The savings versus other European food is considerable. As for Villa, they are so expensive that it's a joke. Many products are sold at prices that are 20-50% higher than at places like Big-C and even Foodland.

It depends on if the Casino supply chains are still available to them at workable prices after the acquisition. No way to know that now, but I am not optimistic. For example, there is a vacuum-packed coffee I love to buy at some Big C Extra stores. Not all stock it. It is Casino brand that they source in S. America. I will be buying up all I can find now.

I'm not sure if Thai businesses follow our western way of thinking in this area. Sometimes, I get the impression that having 23 shelf kilometres of cooking oil, and the another 35 kilometres of fish sauce, is more important than a diversified selection of food.

I find quality and selection of products vary a lot across the different Villa outlets. As for beef, then you have obviously never been to Central Chitlom.

I stopped using Tesco because of the pathetic selection of imported goods.

BigC (at least the one I go to in central Pattaya) has a lot of imported items (mostly French) of reasonable quality at slightly less than eye-watering prices. It also has a French baker and an English butcher.

If the new owners get rid of any of that it will be very bad news as far as I'm concerned.

Casino also had a large selection of pastas, pasta sauces and dry products like mashed potato. All these products are located on 1 long shelf, and was almost fully stocked on Friday.

Today all the products mentioned above had their place taken by brand name products.

I suppose TCC Group won't care much about foreign customers. It's the Thai customers that make their profit, and catering for a relatively, at least in their eyes, small customer group may be seen as more of a hassle than a business potential. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear that Big-C will be looking more like Lotus Tesco in the future.

Casino Group won't ship in tons of their products knowing that they will go into the deal with TCC Group anyway. It's cheaper for them in this situation to buy alternative foreign products as they need them from local distributors.
