Russian couple’s lucky escape after rock falls through car windscreen in Hua Hin

rus.jpg

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN:-- A Russian couple had a lucky escape when a large stone fell from a truck they were travelling behind and smashed through the windscreen of their car.

The incident happened on Friday morning in the Khao Tao area of Hua Hin as the couple were travelling from the town centre in the direction of Pranburi.

Daily News reports the couple were travelling behind a 10 wheeled truck loaded with stones when one of the stones came loose and fell from the vehicle and onto the windscreen of their black Honda car and hitting the 65 year male driver.

It is reported the stones had not been adequately secured or covered in the truck, which did not stop with the driver of seemingly unaware the incident took place.

The Russian man received treatment on the side of the road for head injuries and was later taken to hospital for further treatment.

Sorry but how close were they driving to the truck. That size rock will not travel far when falling from a truck, so they had to be closer than the safe following distance.

Really? Are you blaming the tourists for driving to close to the truck? 5555 That's very funny. I've never seen anyone keeping a safe distance while driving here. TH is the number 1 country in the world for tailgating.

You don't think that the truck driver should load his freight safely so that it doesn't 'fly' out of the truck?

Well yes the cargo should be secured in the ben but I have to agree that he was driving to close yes this is the tailgating capital of the world

doesn't mean you have to drive like them, that's what I teach my girlfriend keep a safe distance so you have time to react and keep your eyes

scanning front and mirrors both rear and sides.

Easy to say, but in my experience stones falling from trucks tend to bounce.

i live in Khao Tao. i ride my motorcycle all over Thailand and I call this stretch of road between Khao Tao and Pranburi the "Highway of Death".

it is the only way to Pranburi from Hua Hin without going way out of your way.

Not sure if they are tourists or Expats, but as a expat I say:

"We all knew the risks when we volunteered for the Thailand mission."

another saying that comes to mind every time i drive this "highway" and survive:

Spock: "Random chance seems to have operated in our favor."
McCoy "In plain non-Vulcan English -- we've been lucky."
Spock "I believe I said that, Doctor."

I agree. The rock very well could have hit the road and bounced or "flipped" up due to forward momentum and its roughness.

My first course of action when a truck/car/motorbike in front is covering large heavy objects is to back away and move out of the vehicles wake.

They must have been bumber to bumped for his not to land on the road insteado f the wind screen!!!

I initially thought so too... However, in retrospect for the rock to have landed straight onto the Windscreen they'd have had to be improbably close, less than a couple of meters which seems highly unlikely.

As other posters have mentioned, its more probable that the rock bounced out of the truck and bounced on the road - when travelling at a reasonable speed this seems more likely.

As far as unsecured loads are concerned - we see this all the time here, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more frequently. The Russian couple of very fortunate they weren't seriously injured.

There is a law which prohibits uncovered pickups from carrying loads on the expressways. However, I see pickups carrying uncovered loads all the time. People just don't care, there are no consequences for their failure to think.
