Voting is underway in Iran. The election will shape the future of Iran for at least a decade.

Hardliners and moderate candidates are vying for seats in parliament and a separate assembly of experts which will choose the country’s next supreme leader.

The presidential election is set for next year. President Rouhani’s reformist government is run by moderates, but other institutions such as parliament are still dominated by conservatives.

The president’s allies hope to build on Iran’s nuclear deal which led to the lifting of economic sanctions, and attract more investment.

The election will shape the future of Iran for at least a decade.

...and that shape will closely resemble the shape of the last 10 years.... coffee1.gif

Iran's future was shaped by the revolution, nothing will change that until the Mullahs are overthrown. So called moderate Rouhani presided over more executions than Ahmadinejad.

From what little I have heard and read, it will be interesting to see how the burgeoning younger generation of the electorate, who I understand have not been previously going to the polls that much, votes in these new elections.

Maybe someone has more detailed info on this.

60% of the population are youths with a 40% unemployment rate

They have experienced decades of a militant and conservative leadership. Now with a moderate government opening Iran to Western investment, they have a chance to create their own Persian Spring. If they are shut out of the elections, greater open conflict is likely. Strife that likely attract Al Qeada and ISIL terrorism.

Not being a political genius.Let me get this right.Iran has an election.A president is elected. But is he the sole leader of the country,or is he still responsible to an Ayatollah, who has to sanction all his decree's etc.
