Hi

I'm trying to convince my mother to come to Thailand for a holiday and consider having her knee operated on, as she was refused by the NHS in the Uk because of her weight.

I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar done and have a rough idea of price. Alternatively can you recommend anyone who might do this and will my mother be able to take some advice via phone before she makes a decision to come over.

Thanks

No idea of the price here but I respect Thai surgeons and would expect them to get things done well, generally.

My mother had both of her knees done in the states over the last 3 years, but she was skinny as a bird- physical strength is important during rehabilitation. You might consider this a warning message for your mother's health in general and work on dieting with her before you get this operation done, whether it is in the UK or in Thailand.

M mother's recovery was a "textbook" model according to the docs, but she's as stubborn as a bulldog with a will of steel, and refused to remain off her feet.

I'd recommend the top hospitals here for this operation as it's especially important the equipment (operating theatre) and implants are as up-to-date as possible- there's a high risk of bone infection, and those are really hard to fix, so they have to do everything under an oxygen tent with maximum antisepsis.

You may want to check with one of the new business that are starting that help people get to Thailand for medical procedures. I am sure they have a price list and hospitals. They do all the middleman work and I think their fee is included in the price. I would imagine that the cost with them is only a small percent higher than if you did your own shopping for a doctor and hospital.

I have a good friend who had a hip replacement done at BNH. He was able to throw his cane away two weeks after the surgery and is free of pain for the first time in years. He could have had it done free in the US but opted to pay for it here. I didn't ask him how much it cost but I can tell you that he is as tight as the bark on a tree.

Frankly, if she is really overweight, she needs to lose weight before the knee replacement surgery or she will have a very long hard haul. I speak from experience here. I've watched my (overweight) dad struggle after his knee replacement for months.
