PHUKET: -- Despite there being an announcement only last week that current reserves will be enough to see residents and tourists through until the seasonal rains arrive in May, official are urging people to conserve water and use it wisely during this hot season.

Phuket Meteorologist Department Director, Wiwat Intarapanich told The Phuket News last Friday (Mar 11) that despite the fact that little rainfall had replenished natural water reserves since the start of the year, he was confident current reserves will be enough until the seasonal rains arrive in May.

However, Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupapana held a press conference yesterday (Mar 16) at Phuket City Municipality Office in Phuket Town with officials to address the readiness of the municipality to handle the hot season and any possible drought.

Mayor Somjai said after the meeting, “I don’t think we will have a water shortages issue with the supply to 70 per cent of the area covered under our municipality of our water supply because our system, such as the one on Damrong Rd and in Samkong, are connected to each other and we can change where the water is released from and direct it to where water is needed the most.”

She continued, “The only location that worries me is the water reserve near Suan Luang Rama 9 which supplies water to Chao Fa East, Bangkok and Poonphol roads.

“This reserve is now quite dry and will give sufficient water supply for about 1-2 weeks then it will probably be dried out,” she said.

We've been buying water for several weeks now in Kamala (Hua Kwan) as there is no supply from the Orbortor.

Wonder if anyone has done a feasibility study on a reverse osmosis plant for the island?

Thera are surrounded by water after all and the population is not going to get smaller.

Enough water until May when the rain comes. Lets hope the rain is not delayed a couple

of months, and lets hope the rains are above average to replenish reservoirs. whistling.gif

So there is no drought and all fine and dandy. But oh, there are three big roads that will already be dry within two weeks. And oh we have a really good water supply system that is interconnected but well, actually not everything is covered.

And no there is no shortage but everyone please conserve water and btw nearly a third of the municipality wont have water.

No no, no water problem. What do you say? There are already areas where there hasn't been proper water supply for weeks? Lalala I can't hear you!

Don't worry, the new underpass by Tescos will be open just in time to catch all the rain water. New reservoir coming right up.
