WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will nominate the first woman to head a U.S. military combatant command, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Friday, a major milestone in a department that this year opened all combat jobs to women.

Air Force Gen. Lori Robinson is being nominated to head U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command. If confirmed by the Senate, Robinson, would be the seventh commander to head the Colorado-based command. She currently is head of the Pacific Air Force.

Northern Command was created in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to coordinate and improve homeland defense and to provide support for national disasters. She would replace Adm. William Gortney, who is retiring.

Carter also said that Obama will nominate Gen. Vincent Brooks to head U.S. Forces Korea. Brooks currently is in charge of U.S. Army Pacific Command.

Brooks' nomination also is subject to Senate confirmation.

1. You have no senior military command or leadership experience, yet, you provide a comment on her qualifications.

2. You obviously have no understanding of what the position is. Its primarily related to NORAD. NORAD is information and air traffic control driven. The other function is to oversee defense against an invasion of the U.S. mainland. As it is unlikely there will be a military invasion of the USA, the secondary role is to provide support for civil authorities, i.e. states and counties when there is a catastrophe such as windstorm or flood. It is a job that is heavy on management and logistics skills.

3. The nominee has an impressive educational background, and extensive on the job experience where she was tested and vetted since the 1990's.

What qualifies you to pass judgement on someone you know nothing about? Have you ever had a senior leadership role? Do you have more than a secondary education? Do you know what the General's responsibilities will be?

The answer is an obvious no.

She isn't going to be leading an armored assault from the turret of a Sherman (or an Abrams), ala George S. Patton. She will not have to face close quarters combat in her new position.

I have worked for and with a number of Generals during my career and counted many of them as friends. I would expect her decision making ability is up to par with any of them. and they were all educated far beyond your self proclaimed Masters level.

She is a four star General and that doesn't come easily.

I don't like Obama, and many of his appointments I consider questionable. This would not be one of them.

Problem with military leaders you don't know if they really are good until you see the outcome of an engagement. Believe most countries have had military leaders that turned out disasters. She may be a brilliant tactician or she just may play the promotion game better than most.

That aside, when making selections based on keeping interest groups happy there will always be doubt about actual competence. Political Correctness seems to be the new Nepotism, Meritocracy contradicts human nature's inclination to favouring friends or those of a similar outlook.
