Thai names - To Porn or not to Porn

Featured Replies

Just a silly Brit transliteration, since "porn" is pronounced as "pawn" in Thai why not just change the spelling to Varapawn.

That's almost exactly how the Thais say her name - actually they say WEARAPAWN - but the ignorant western medical receptionists change it to VERYPORN by defaultsad.png

I think it's a form of mild passive aggressiveness

They're quite stressed out..

I would go with changing the "p" for a "b".....Veraborn, sounds almost identical, but no chance of misinterpretation as with "porn

They'd still ask dumb questions

"Oh, Veraborn - that's a cute name ( ya, right..) - what does if mean?"whistling.gif

I don't understand what you attractive nieces have to do with your wife's name or you being in Canada....

As I guess your main point is your wife's name and what ignorant people in the erst imply to it I'll only reply to this issue.

In written Thai there are basically only 3 sounds to ending consonants: b/t/n

all consonant change their sound to one of these when they appear at the end of the word. R belong to the group that changes to N. basically Thai people can't pronounce porn like western people. Many westerners think by mistake that R at the end of the word makes the preceding vowel longer thus phown. This is not true as the length of the vowel doesn't change according to the following consonant, so what written in English letters as phorn our porn is actually pronounced simply as pon. In พร the vowel O is short so it is just pon.

So the easiest thing to do if she wants to keep her name and not be questioned about it is just spell it as it really sounds

Hi LukKrueng - (speaking of loaded names) - Thai names ending with Porn, and those Thai women named Boom and Bang have inherent sexual connotations in the west - but not in Thailand - hence the loosely associated link..

But Being in Canada is indeed trivial, has nothing to do with my alleged attractive nieces, nor my wife's name - so thanks for pointing that out

I once was a salesman and I was filling out the Sales Form. So when I asked the customers his last name he said; "Flowers". For some reason I thought this amusing but I bit my lower lip trying not to show anything and then I asked him his first name. He then said: "Red". That's it! I cracked up and couldn't hold it anymore. Who the Hell names there kid "Red Flower"? Especially a Boy! I wanted to ask if his sister's name was "Violet" but couldn't stop laughing.

I lost the sale but the laugh was worth it.
