Hi all, She applied for a six month visa. She was granted a three month visa. There was no explanation. Can anyone help with why they would do that and more importantly what we can do to get what we asked for? Appreciate it.

I am not a expert but check if it is a 3 month visa that can be extended by 3 months to make it a 6 month visa.

I believe these applications are outsourced to a Thai agency in Bangkok. Not staffed or managed by Australians as one would expect. When we applied we got the same as you, 3 months. After the application was approved a Thai man from their office called my wife on the phone and said, "You come back! You come back! You don't stay long time! You get on plane!" LOL

In my experience, once the visa has been granted the visa holder cannot request to have the duration of the visa changed.

The duration of a visitor visa visa is up to the discretion of the decision maker.

The visa application centre in Bangkok simply collects the applicant's documents before they are to sent to the Australian embassy where a decision is made on the application.

6 month visitor visas are issued by the embassy in Bangkok to thai nationals but a number of health examinations must be passed before the visa is granted.

Is condition 8503 attached to the visa? You will find this information on the visa grant notice.

As Will27 stated, so long as no further stay condition is not applied, one can request to extend a Tourist Visa once in Oz. From the Immi website:

"In Australia, all passport holders can apply online for a Visitor visa extension"

The condition 8503 is attached to the visa. Is it worth contacting the embassy and asking "was it an error?" Or "we applied for 6 months can you provide us with reasoning for granting 3 months?"

Pretty much a waste of time TBH.

As stated, 6 month visas are rarely issued so doubt

the 3 month visa issued was an error.

They don't have to provide a reason but pretty sure

it would be along the lines stated in my earlier reply.

Three months is sufficient time for a tourist visa.

Spot on. I applied for a visa for my lady, after signing a required form if I wanted to act on her behalf in the application. I was called as was my wife by a Thai officer and asked a few questions.

In my letter I outlined the flight details and days of travel most convenient for us and my family in Australia. Not long after my wife received a letter, application approved, but the dates of entry and departure the visa could be utilised were completely different to those I had submitted. I rang the agency, could we go on the dates I had informed them in my letter? "yes, but just make another application and payment first please."

I didn't bother but it is obvious that writing a letter to the agency and expecting all to go well is a waste of time.
