Colourful 'vomit-like' Australian $5 note unveiled

“New Australian $5 note really knocks years off the Queen,” tweeted Joanna Hall /AFP

AUSTRALIA: -- It may be the smallest-denominated Australian dollar banknote, but a new design for the Aus$5 bill (B134) attracted an outsized amount of criticism when it was unveiled today (Apr 12), with detractors calling it “hideous” and “like vomit”.

The note, which will replace its more bland predecessor from September 1, features a yellow Prickly Moses wattle flower and a colourful Eastern Spinebill native bird.

“Each banknote in the new series will depict a different species of Australian wattle and a native bird within a number of the elements,” Reserve Bank of Australia governor Glenn Stevens said in a statement.

“The designs are the culmination of a process of extensive consultation with subject-matter experts and the cash-handling industry, as well as qualitative research involving focus groups.”

But critics – from social media users to bird-lovers – were quick to express their disdain.

"Our new fivers look like vomit," one user wrote on Twitter, while another quipped: "A thousand monkeys with a thousand versions of Photoshop could never come up with something as hideous as the new Australian $5 note."

Some questioned why the same portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was drawn from photographs commissioned by the central bank in 1984, was used rather than a recent image of Australiaʼs head of state.

These whining and whinging drop kicks must be living the good life if this is all they have to complain about. Most likely these Aussies are descendants of the British.

Why do you think we got rid of them?

Well, yes, I guess most Ockers would recognise a bit of barbie and fried rice washed down with some tinnies... when the techicolour yawn missed the dunnie!!!

How's the governor general doing ?

Could have been worse.

Love it mate ! Little too much sauce on the pie though otherwise perfect!!!

I think a pie floater would have been more appropriate.

Reminds me a bit of the old Fruit Salad chews we used to eat as a kid (don't know if you had them down under?)

I really prefer this fiver than the new one.

It has a special texture so blind people can quickly identify the note. That's a good idea. Could lose Britain's Queen though. The design looks a little amateurish.

The old notes don't have this feature?

Not too bad, could have been a more up to date design. One of the problems with money in oz is that because the $5 note is the lowest currency you end up with a couple of kilos of coin in your pocket thus making it necessary to constantly pull up your pants before they get dragged to your knees, even with a fully tightened belt.
