I have a high temperature 39.7oC , red skin, joint pains, blurred vison, cannot drive, balance is affected, I was in bed for two days solid, up and down all night. Still not better.

I went to the local hospital and saw a Thai Doctor. He wanted a Urine Sample and a Blood Test. He wanted me in for Intravenous Drip as well but I refused.

Despite having the Urine Sample and the Blood, he could only tell me that I had an unknown to him Virus.

They only seem to tell one what one already knows.

Have any members experienced any similair symptoms themselves?

High temps for prolonged periods are never good. Where are you? If you're near Bangkok or Phuket, get yourself to the nearest International Hospital asap. They have the facilities to diagnose rare diseases. Best ones are in BKK, Bumrungrad or Samitivej Sukhumvit.

The longer you wait, the worse it might be.

Did he suggest you do something besides getting the IV drip?

This could be a lot of things, some of them quite serious. As suggested, go to one of the better international hospitals and be sure to see an infectious disease specialist. These hospitals have the capacity to do more extensive diagnostic tests than the average local hospital. They mat also want to do a spinal tap, if so, let them.

Don't delay, you could have a very serious problem.

A friend of mine had the same symptoms that you have described. Additionally, she also had memory loss, significant weight loss in 3 days, and although her English wasn't affected, she lost her Thai language ability. The first hospital treated her for the symptoms after deciding it wasn't malaria or dengue. After being out of the hospital for no more than a day, she was found (fortunately by a friend) basically wandering the streets looking for her house, totally lost. I took her to a private hospital here in Chiang Mai and we were immediately sent to the university hospital. She had a spinal tap, another test to check her brain, and in the end the doctors said that because the first hospital had treated teh symptoms, they were unable to tell her any more than she'd had a virus of some sort.

Don't mess with it and don't take medicine to make yourself feel better. Get to a hospital and find out what's wrong. Who knows if it's the same thing, but it took her 3 months to stop being shaky and to get her full memory back.

Good luck.

i agree with all the above!

i have had some serious illness since being here in thailand and have seen people with similar symptoms which has been diagnosed as dengue, malaria, meningitis to name a few.

my friend with meningitis said that the spinal tap was the best thing ever as he could feel the pain literally drain away. he was back to normal within a day.

good luck. i hope you feel well soon.

I agree with your first doctor, it's not so important what virus it is now, as what is killing you is the fever and dehydration. You may not be able to hydrate yourself by just drinking, thus the IV drip.
