Most of those tin shacks you refer to, are temporary workers accommodation for the people (usually Cambodian, Burmese etc) who are building the houses and condos, not permanent houses for poor people, as I assume you have assumed. There is a lot of them in the jomtien area because there is a lot of construction there currently.

This is common all over Thailand to house the temporary workers in this style of temporary accommodation that the workers themselves knock up in a couple of days. It saves them money renting elsewhere and time as they can be at work in a minute. Also enables them to have their families close by on site.

Very practical.

Looks like word might have got out that there is a new breed of stronger and braver Englishman about these days, so these snatchers are targeting Thais.

No petty crime in your home country?

That is all most of what is reported on Pattaya One is. Just petty crime.

Hardly ever see a "report" on Pattaya One where the police are not involved. That is just their style, they get their news from following the police around. So every little bit of petty crime is reported, giving the illusion that it is worse than it actually is. Hardly ever read about a petty bag snatch in the Bangkok post, Nation etc.

Pattaya is one of the worlds great cities, and a tourist one at that. It goes on everywhere in the world.

Also by your post it sounds like you have assumed they are Thai. Maybe, maybe not.

Almost as sad as your previous post when you had a helmet stolen from your bike, and you said it was "probably" a farang. I guess you think "No Thai would do that".

A lot of cynical people here like to always comment on the crime aspect of Thailand. I grew up in southeast San Diego , and spent part of my younger days just outside of the main part of East L.A........in my neighborhood almost daily drive by's were a fact of life.......there is a certain amount of crime in every society. But to paint the entire country as having an endemic problem is a bit excessive. Parts of every country faces the same problems. Most major populous areas in every city of every country has the same events.... Actually I don't think here in Thailand is any worse then other countries....as the saying goes "S..t" happens. I have lived in several "developing " countries........all have the same basic events happening. In some it gets more press coverage then in others......

The stronger and braver Englishmen still carrying their handbags with no fear? I bet they are so cute.

Chang singlet, beer gut, sandals with long socks and a Hermes handbag.

Must look an absolute treat.

The Thai bag snatchers would never touch them. Fall off their motorbikes laughing first.

Go to the quote, I have never said a "No Thai would do that"

It is still my gut feeling though a farang stole my helmet that day. A lot of shifty farang around Pattaya. Be careful everybody. They say Pattaya is the most crime affected city in Thailand. It is also the city with the highest per head of farang. Hmmmmm. What does that tell you Bpring?

That has been the only time I have been a victim of crime in Pattaya, and it was years ago. Don't wear gold, don't lose your temper, don't abuse Thas, and you should be ok.

Life's good in Pattaya, the City of Love.

So you think that farangs are to blame for "most of the crime" in Pattaya. Pathetic apologist.

I think its also the city with the highest concentration of people who walk around with expensive jewelry and lots of loose cash in their pockets. Often at 2am at night in a non-sober state.

The phrase 'easy pickings' comes to mind.

Still, if that's the worse crime to be had in Pattaya, I'll take it. In fact: Don't flash jewelry, don't flash cash = 0 crime ?

(Well, and use a wallet and not purse)
