Vaccinations?

Featured Replies

Someone I know recently had a bout of dysentery while in Samui. Not sure if he had picked it up there as he had recently returned from the Phils. Despite visiting the hospital in Samui, it wasn't diagnosed until he returned home. He cut short his holiday as he was so sick.

Anyway, while back in the UK, I decided to get my vaccinations updated, so off I went to the clinic.

These are what I had: Tetanus/Diptheria/Polio (3-in-1 shot), Typhoid, Hep B (1 of 3). Hep A is still current.

They also recommended Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies, but three was enough for me for now. I don't like needles. I can get any others later if I so decide.

I didn't know anything about Japanese Encephalitis, but apparently it's another mosquito borne disease.

Do you guys tend to keep your shots updated? Or do you consider Samui to be a much lower risk than other parts of Thailand and therefore don't bother?

Outside Samui Hospital in Nathon,(main entrance) they have a list of local health concerns that are current. Both in Thai and English.

I must admit, I never gotten updates on shots either... perhaps one day I'll get a round tuit! wink.png

You being a gardening man Jim, I would have thought you would have Tetanus jab at the least. smile.png

The reservoir for Japanese B is pigs, the disease is found in rural areas where pigs are raised. If you will only be in Samui (or Samui and Bangkok) I think no need.

In future you can skip the typhoid - the vaccine is not very effective and risk is very, very low in Thailand.
