What the hell is the 'Apple ID'?

Featured Replies

Just got an email (in the spam) that my appleid has been upgraded. If not you, click here.

I do not recall any former Apple ID, nor do i want one. I use MacBook Pro, but few connection functions.

Is the Apple ID message legit or merely some kind of phishing mode?

I don't think Apple IDs get "upgraded". Most likely a hacker phishing.

Apple will never send you an email asking you to click a link and verify your Apple ID. That was most definitely a phishing email you received.

I just received another Apple ID phishing email yesterday. Beware of this one:

apple-store_2x.png Customer Email:  We're working on system update.

We are contacting you regarding failed data authentication we have an update.

Visit [fake link inserted here] to view and have biIIing issues resloved.

Funny...the scammers went to all this trouble and then misspelt "resolved".

By the way, if you do get one of these, you can view the link address without clicking it. The domain for the site in this phishing site is in Vietnam.

This might help to identify those fake messages.

1 dead giveaway to look for is that legit Apple Emails (same as for example PayPal) will address the email to you personally and NOT something like "Dear Customer".

The phishing email I received yesterday actually had "Customer Email: [my email]" in an attempt to make it look legit.

But then there was the English grammar used in the message:

We are contacting you regarding failed data authentication we have an update.

...and the misspelling of "resolved"

I regularly receive phishing emails titled 'last chance to verify your Apple ID'.

In the main body of the message is the usual 'your Apple account will be closed down after twenty-four hours if you do not verify your account', blah blah.

Safely ignored.
