It seems I change stylists and shops on a monthly basis. The only good person usually leaves.

Today I was at Tesco Lotus in a shop on Rama 4. I asked them to color my hair light brown and it was as red as the Colorado theatre shooter.

Can anyone suggest a really good hair salon in the Sukhumvit area that I will be able to stick with?

I'm at the point where I don't mind paying more to avoid the aggravation.

Even the expensive shopping mall salons seem to have a high turnover rate. I don't think I have ever had the same stylist 3 times in a row. It's always so nice when you find one who understands English and actually cuts your hair as you request but inevitably, the next time: "Go home village"

I actually found a few inexpensive neighborhood barber shops that were better at following my wishes than most salons.

I'm having the same problem. Last two gave me "the mushroom" -- super short on the sides and then abruptly longer on the top third of my head. I've had haircuts from 300 to 800 Baht and there seems to be zero correlation between price and quality. My old rule of thumb from when I used to travel continuously for work was to look for gay-looking barbers, and/or stylish looking barbers in general. If the guy is a slob for himself, you can tell right there they don't have a sense of style or taste.

Try Noi in the hair salon on the 4th floor of MBK. Enter from the BTS side, walk all the way to the end of the building where all the banks are, turn right and walk past the banks to the end. I forget the name of the salon but it's the very big one with about 30 or more chairs in it. Noi really spends a lot of time giving me a great haircut. She charges 300 and I've tipped her an extra 50. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip.

I should have mentioned this in my initial post. I finally got smart (relatively) and using my mobile, took a couple of "selfies", front, side and rear when I did get a good haircut that looked the way I wanted it to. It really helps getting the stylist to understand what I want.

Those barbers in malls always have a whole team ready for only washing the hair. Only that allready takes half an hour.

I will never go to a Thai barber again, have had such terrible experiences that i would rather do it myself. Last 2 times my wife cut my hair and i'm happy with it, i just bought the best equipment for her and hope she can do it faster in future. It now takes one hour but than it's really nice.

Washing your hair at MBK only takes about five minutes and they do it right away. I always opt not to have my hair washed again after the haircut. I find the big salon in MBK to be more efficient than a lot of the smaller places.

I have had the same problem for years in Thailand. I need a good cut as there is not much there but still too much to warrant a complete shave off. My hair is receding and slightly thinning on top so it can be a delicate situation to say the least when having the trim in Thailand. When in the uk the barber knows to cut to complement what hair you have and shape of head, face etc. Here I have had some major disasters , I have had 100 baht cuts up to 5 or 600 baht cuts but not much difference between them, all pretty bad. The language barrier is also a problem.

The good news is I have recently started going to truefitt and hill in the emporium shopping mall, Bangkok and my last 3 cuts have been excellent ,at least on par with my usual uk barber. It's 1100 baht which is more expensive than your usual Thai barber and salon but for me it's what I usually pay in England and well worth it for not looking like a complete t*at for a fortnight until the bad cut has grown out , plus I'm no longer stressed about going.

They also speak good English . Don't bother with the shave though, that's 1500 baht! Any cheap Thai barber can shave.

Hi mate my wife is a bit of a wiz with the scissors. She has been doing my hair for a few years now and is bloody good at it.

She charges Thai rate, so for less than 500 baht you can look as good as I do.

Here is the haircut she did for me today.

Oh double wammy for me as I only get charged 400 baht. The joys of having a Thai wife.

Ten Ten by Suk 33.

Can you suggest any particular stylist there please?

There is only one lady...speaks excellent English and knows how to cut hair for both men and women.

I advise you to book as can be busy.

You could try Schwing at Maxim House on Wireless Road. Nikki, the owner, speaks fluent English and would be the one cutting your hair. A lot of expat ladies go there.
