Find one documented case where this had actually happened, and I might just stop laughing at you.

Please, I just googled, "police caught planting evidence" guess how many hits I got; that is if you can stop laughing.

Edit add: Now, of course you will say--not at the Nana--well, of course not, Thai police would never plant evidence, we all know that too.

police planting drugs on tourists, no way! they would never do such a thing on innocent tourists whistling.gif

come on this is a country the police have been found involved in serious crime like murder (of tourists also), abduction (of tourists also), involved in the drug trades, involved in human trafficking, extortion, running racket, harassement of tourists etc etc etc

A case about a young british who was set up by a rogue police in a drug case in pattaya. The police planted drug on the young tourist and asked for a huge amount of money.

Luckily the british outsmarted the crooked policeman and got him arrested....

On Tuesday a 21 year old British national walked into Pattaya Police station in Soi 9 and told officers he was being shaken down for money by one of their own officers. The man, Marc Ture, told them he had been engaged in conversation by a Thai man in Pattayaland Soi 3, better known as Boyztown, on Monday. He alleged the man had managed to slip an amount of marijuana into his pockets and not long afterwards he was approached by a police sergeant who asked to search his person. The Englishman was shocked when the policeman found a quantity of marijuana and he told the policeman he didn’t know how it got there. The sergeant told the Englishman not to worry and if he handed over 30,000 baht to the policeman he would forget all about the offence. The Englishman told the sergeant he didn’t have this kind of money on him but he would obtain it and pay him on Tuesday. The policeman agreed and an appointment was made for Tuesday at the Englishman’s hotel in Soi 2. Marc Ture then went to the Pattaya police station and told his story. Senior officers then laid a trap for their rogue colleague. The sergeant arrived with the man who had originally planted the marijuana on Marc Ture, but the tables were turned when waiting officers arrested the rogue pair. It is likely the sergeant will be moved to a very inactive post.

Fair to say the biggest problem in Thailand is the corruption in the Thai police force.....

So readily apparent to expats.

One would imagine this goes through the whole of the system.

Just have to get used to understanding there is no real concept of law enforcement,

Seems to be a system based on money......and not law for all.

It's a bit sad but that's the way it is,

It is endemic over south east Asia.

I'm not suggesting you leave the forum, but what's your point? Could it be that his incident happened in Pattaya, and not the Nana Plaza? You dismissed a serious question as laughable. Police planting evidence has been a real issue since evidence was first required. It can and does happen all too frequently--remember the Manila Airport fiasco of planting bullets on passengers? Try something a little closer to Nana, the Thai zig-zag scam where stolen property, illegal substances, etc. were planted on passengers at Swampy http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8154497.stm

Think about it. Would the police rather continue to make lots of pay-off money from Nana clubs, or would they prefer to scare off paying-customer farangs in order to make much less money?

Let's think about it again. Not that I think many are (or should be) buying the original story here, but so far as your point goes, the local culture is simply not to think that far ahead (I.e., choose 'All the above'..). WRT "set ups", I personally wouldn't put much of anything past them and do my best to keep my distance nowadays ('didn't used to be that way). One man's "paranoia" is another's healthy instinct for self-preservation.

Yes.

And Yes.

What surprises me most is that the majority here think this couldn't happen

Many would like to believe that Bangkok or Thailand, in general, is a perfect place to live. They sacrificed a lot to retire here. They have children that are half Thai. They want or need to believe. Some buy the Thai fantasy, some don't. If you are careful, living here is good.
