Jools to close after nearly 30 years

I enjoy going out alone in Bkk sometimes. Once I stumbled into the Tavern Bar on soi 4 and a decade later I count some of the people I met there good friends.

In the late eighties and early nineties.  I loved hitting the Plaza solo Sunday afternoon. You were almost guaranteed a good conversation.  Ditching into Woodstock or any of the old places was great. Times have changed surely.

Man SB that last comment struck me almost the same as when someone says they have never read a book.

I remember the specials being advertised for the Cathouse but never got around to going in. Think I might have been in the Plaza twice since Woodstock moved out. And speaking of that bar I have heard it is now closed, deservedly so in my opinion they closed an atmospheric genuine boozer and replaced it with a sterile, minimalist waste of space in Ekamai.

I remember Cathouse well, fun place. Hade many OK early evenings there.

I think maybe its a generational thing. Going to a pub on your own and making smalltalk with strangers at the bar seems like something old men used to do.

Sure, I've been travelling on my own, a bunch of times. You meet people during the day while you're out and about doing stuff, and go drinking with them.

But waiting for a taxi, and saying 'hey' I am here everything is cool. I am a tit, but I am computer savvy.

Private Dancer made Jool's legendary.

I can remember having a burger at Woodstock in the corner of the Plaza, only carry out's afterwards.

I wonder how many are even aware of Private Dancer now, I only actually read it myself a few years ago.

Big Ron aka Big Dave is/was apparently doing quite well and now in the Bristol area and has his kids with him. Also a taste for real ale.

Could you put real names to any of the other characters or know any of their histories. I never even heard the book mentioned in Jools.

I do not know of these "old" people to whom you occasionally allude.

I am obviously younger than you as I suspect I have been at it a lot longer and therefore have more knowledge and experience of it than you. This "stuff" that you do with people you "meet" does it involve  rubbing coconut oil or sunscreen factor 38 onto each other?? Do not worry, Viz magazine says this is OK as long as you do not make eye contact.

I think you are right. I had never eaten there until I read the book, back when you had to download it online for free. Stephen Leather could not get a published for it at the time.
