Interior Ministry issues urgent landslide prevention order to all provinces

BANGKOK, 1 July 2016 (NNT) – The Miistry of Interior has issued urgent orders to all provinces on the prevention and mitigation measures against landslide disasters caused by heavy rains, while officials have been stationed to provide assistance to the affected public around the clock, says an official.

Ministry of Interior's Deputy Permanent-Secretary Chayaphol Thitisak has said that the current heavy rains in many areas of Thailand has increased the likelihood of landslide disaster, posing a risk to the lives and properties of the general public. Mr. Chayaphol said that the Minister of Interior Gen Anupong Paojinda has ordered all related agencies to set the guidelines and prepare measures to mitigate all possible situations and ensure that fast response assistance measures are provided to the general public.

Related agencies are ordered to evaluate the risk of landslide occurrence in the potential areas, evaluate the appropriate prevention and mitigation measures, and hold rehearsals to ensure the readiness among officials to ensure that assistance will be provided to the general public for 24 hours everyday.

Local organizations and the general public are also urged to help survey for items or constructions that disrupts the water flow, and to inform the people living in the foothills, lowlands, and landslide risk areas with up-to-date information, as well as provide instructions on what to do in case an incident occurs and notify on observable signs of unusual happenings in nature.

In case of landslide, the general public are prohibited from entering the disaster site, and will be considered for immediate evacuation out of the landslide path. The general public can also report information of unusual happenings or sightings to the 24-hour 1784 emergency hotline.

I wonder if they will do something about the Patong City sign on a rock wall which is leaning over & supposedly holding back tons of hillside.

Urging local organizations and the general public to help survey it, and to inform the people living in the risk areas with up-to-date information, as well as provide instructions on what to do in case an incident occurs?

In other words, lip service...

They'll get to it when it falls down, no to do anything need until then because it doen't count as a problem until then..

Knowing it's going to fall down doesn't count as a problem. Because it might not.

Landslide prevention can really only be carried out in the drier seasons....anchoring soil, installing matting products to promote vegetation growth.....and stopping illegal logging.....none of which ever gets done.

So, as the country enters the wet season, making hill sides very difficult to access......the ministry of stupid affairs issues urgent orders.......they really are a joke!

Quick!!!....everyone go out and plant some trees on the hillside....help out the Interior Ministry's landslide prevention effort. Of course it will be years before the tree roots grow enough to help secure the ground but I'm sure the Interior Ministry and National News Bureau of Thailand will write-up a press release making it sound like the govt has saved the day. Quick!!!!

I thought they had ordered the land to not slide

The OP seems to be saying that it is the Rain which is the cause of the landslides. So maybe they should order to rain to stop falling in dangerous areas.

"Local organizations and the general public are also urged to help survey for items or constructions that disrupts the water flow, and to inform the people living in the foothills, lowlands, and landslide risk areas with up-to-date information"

Look there is a tree - it is disrupting the water flow down the hill. Someone cut it down quick....
