Regional Greetings

In the English language ther are heaps of regional greetings:-

How're you going? Great mate(Oz)

How's it going? Fair to middling

How're you doing? Not so bad

Fit like pal(in Scotland) Chavving

Foos yer doos(Scotland) Aye pecking

Aye aye min

Awlright

etc

What about Thailand?

Noone says "Sawatdi Krap, Sabai dee ma?", do they?

More likely "bpen yang ngai", "bpen yang rai bang" etc.

What about regional ones?

In khon Kaen, I am greeted with "wa ngai" "bpen yang dai" "bpen dai".

What would be the best reply to these?

Assuming you meant to type "Sawatdi Krap, Sabai dee mai?"...

Of course they do. You need to get out of the beer bars and get out and about a bit more

I would expect most if not all westerners to be greeted with the standard by a Thai..... as it's a given that you will understand them that way.

In the rural areas I rarely hear such formality upon meeting. I hear either

ca pai nai (where are you going?)

or

kin khao lao reu yang (have you eaten yet?)

in my office the staff usually greets themself with sawadi krap (ka) and wai when coming and going. As well they use always "Khun....." when speaking to each other.

But it might also be because there is a lot pressure from my wife (the manager) to always speak correctly thai and not slang.

sawasdee krub... tarn kao rue yung

watdee....

ja ai (ok, this one just from my female staff to me, and only the younger ones)

I think it depends on the company we keep too. My father in law uses different Thai words to my wife. I dont have any male Thai friends, only girls (friends of my wifes) so I hear girls greetings more often than not.

Girls tend to be a bit more น้ำเน่า num now (dramatic) over the top than the males.

My wife wont have seen her friends for a couple of weeks as we have 2 kids and its like it has been a bloody decade.

ดีใจมากที่ได้เจอกันอีก ...... เป็นอย่างไรป้าง di jai mark ti dai jer gan iik ...... ben yarng rai barng

ไม่ไดเจอกันนาน..... เป็นอย่างไรป้าง mai dai jer gan narn ..... ben yarng rai barng

I would hate to see them meet after a couple of months!

Should be ....บ้าง (บ ใบไม้ not ป ปลา).

You can also say it like this: เป็นยังไงบ้าง ... or simply ... เป็นไงบ้าง ... or even ... เป็นไง

There's also ว่ายังไง or ว่าไง for "How's it hang'n", "What's up" etc...
