My boss claims that Monday the 18th of July is not a compulsory public holiday. Is that true?

As far as I know it is down to the owner of the business. The PM did say it was a holiday but at the discretion of the owner to choose if to give staff the time off.

So pretty much everyone will work on Monday then. Thailand, never ceases to amaze.

We've exchanged the Wednesday public holiday for Monday. All our staff can have a long weekend.

The number of public holidays in Thailand these days is ridiculous, and amounts to little more than the idiot generals showing off by chucking the serfs some crumbs every now and then in the form of holidays, where they are supposed to grovel in appreciation to the establishment.

Far better to have fewer, and give people more annual leave. That way, people can enjoy their leave when it suits them, and business can keep running by planning around individual staff absences.

People that ask this question are the ones that are still working.

The ones that didnt ask and did whatever they needed to do to get the job done retired early

Except for the "few" government officers and bankers at the main branches e.g.

All offices, schools etc.pp. closed.

All foreign consulates/embassies in Thailand closed.

Cabinet approves extra holidays in 2016 to stimulate tourism

BANGKOK, 6 October 2015 (NNT) - The Cabinet on Tuesday approved 6 May and 18 July 2016 as extra public holidays to allow for long weekend breaks from 5-8 May and 16-20 July 2016. Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Watthanawarangkun said the extra holidays were made to promote tourism in the country.
