Rice bird nests

swallow .

Don't Google Thai swallow as I just did, I wasn't expecting that!

Baya Weaver (I don't think any of the others  build nests with an entry tube).

There are two nest forms. One with a tubular extension extending from the bottom, The female builds a nest in this and the shape deters intruders such as tree snakes. The other type as no tube but is open at the bottom with a woven lateral footrest one which the male bird roosts.

Actually the males do nearly all the building. The nests are not completed until a female has selected the male as a mate and then the male completes the nest, adding the tube. So those without tubes are still "under construction" so to speak. See "Birds of Bangkok" by Philip Round for a more detailed explanation.

Many thanks to everybody for the info.

Baya Weavers they most certainly are. I saw a couple of them through my cheap quality, lightweight glasses the other day. They had yellow crests so I assumed they were the males.

My wife says that people used to sell the nests in the market, but now it’s illegal.

So, sounds like a success story for Thai conservation at last.

So is not a Coconut bird then?

Its not a bird Its a male wild  Chee Chee native to Thailand. It only has one very large one unlike other male mammals that have  2

There are quite a few in southern Sisaket, with some of the locals here just having them hanging at their houses. Display purposes.

Update

Nests have disappeared. Presumably stolen by some halfwit.

The nests were in active use, so presumably had eggs or young inside.

So, so much for conservation!

The short-sighted, selfish attitude of some (most) Thais to their own natural environment never ceases to amaze me.
