Wat Chedi Liam, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Umong, central to Thailand's heritage, are underway in urgent restoration efforts after the quake's impact. Despite no immediate collapse risk, work is underway to preserve these cultural treasures. The earthquake's force sent shockwaves to northern Thailand, causing subtle, yet significant, structural damage to these centuries-old monuments. According to the Ministry of Culture, restoration efforts have already kicked off, focusing on stabilising the sites and ensuring visitor safety. At Wat Chedi Liam, a pagoda dating back to the 13th century in Saraphi district, there are surface cracks on its main chedi, and a secondary structure has collapsed. Traditional methods are being employed to reinforce and reapply stucco to the damaged sections. In the heart of Chiang Mai's old city, Wat Chedi Luang sustained hairline cracks to its plaster walls, with brass decorations dislodged in the process. Restoration there involves using lime plaster and colour matching to keep the site's authenticity intact. The 700-year-old Wat Umong forest monastery, notable for its meditation tunnels, was also impacted. Cracks in the tunnels prompted actions from the Fine Arts Department, employing lightweight materials to bolster the tunnels, ensuring the protection of the murals inside. Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol deems the damage mostly aesthetic, with a push for scholarly restoration methods. She stressed the importance of these temples as cultural connectors and attractions for both locals and tourists alike. Wat Umong's restoration is the current priority, with temporary supports already in place to stave off further damage. Despite the ongoing repairs, most of Chiang Mai's historical sites are open, allowing continued public access alongside these important preservation efforts. Accident 22-Year-Old Hotel Worker Dies in Motorbike Crash in Prachuap Khiri Khan

A 22-year-old hotel employee lost her life on the morning of 22 April, after her motorcycle collided with the rear of a soil-carrying truck in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The victim, identified as Ms. Karittaya, was reportedly on her way to work when the fatal collision occurred. Police Lieutenant Wichan Klin-suk, an investigator with the Ao Noi Police Station, confirmed the incident took place along a rural road connecting Phetkasem Road to the Yang Sue Reservoir in Ban Nong Ya Plong, Ao Noi Subdistrict, Mueang District. Emergency responders from Sawang Prachuap Rescue Foundation and the Ao Noi Subdistrict Administrative Organisation arrived to find the victim lying deceased on the road. She had suffered severe head trauma. Her motorcycle, bearing Prachuap Khiri Khan registration, was found wrecked at the rear of a large soil transport truck, registered in Narathiwat province. According to relatives, Ms. Karittaya had just left home and was en route to her job at a hotel in central Prachuap Khiri Khan. Witness accounts suggest that the soil truck had exited from a roadside excavation site and abruptly cut across her path, leaving her no time to brake. The grieving family expressed outrage, raising concerns over ongoing excavation operations in the area. “There have been numerous near-accidents before,” one relative said. “We don’t even know if these digging and soil transport activities are properly authorised. They’ve caused constant disruption and danger for local residents.” Authorities have launched a formal investigation and are working to determine whether the excavation activities were being conducted legally and if negligence contributed to the fatal crash. The victim’s body has been transferred to hospital for further examination, and will later be released to the family for funeral rites.
