Prince Akishino cancels Thailand visit this week

BANGKOK: -- Imperial Household Agency officials announced the cancellation on Monday.

According to NHK, the prince was scheduled to pay a 4-day visit to Thailand from Thursday to receive an honorary doctorate from Mahasarakham University in the country’s northeast for his research into catfish.

A series of bomb blasts last week in the country’s tourist destinations killed 4 people and injured 36. Thai police and the military are stepping up security measures.

The Imperial Household Agency says the cancellation is out of consideration for the situation there, and the burden that the prince’s visit would place on security authorities, NHK said.

Be fair. This is SOP when there is a local tragedy. The intent is to not become a burden upon  the authorities who are preoccupied with the investigation. This type of visit would require the mobilization of 100's of  police officers and take away personnel from police duties.

I appreciate why the Prince would not visit and to be  blunt, it was the  right decision.

The Military government can't spare a 100,000 soldiers to provide security for the prince?

The prince's cancellation is an embarrasment for Thai security authorities.
