Greetings,

My Thai wife's passport and Thai ID still show her maiden name. Where in Chiang Mai can she go to change her name? We're both new to CM and not sure where to start. Thanks.

(This has probably been asked before, but the search function seems to be down due to indexing...)

Just the amphur office.  Not sure however if any will do or that it has to be the one where she's registered..

After that she then has to update all her bank accounts.

Passport I think can just wait until it's close the expiry date.

My wife did this a few years ago as she had all her Thai ID in her maiden name and her US ID in the married name.  Now all IDs are in agreement and life is simpler.  She must start at her local amphoe office where her tabian baan is located, although in some places this may now be done at the tambon offices.  She then takes all those name change documents to the other issuing offices such as passport and banks.  Nothing difficult but time consuming and for some reason the passport office always needs some additional documentation from the district office.

Hi

you need to go to the registration office, same department your wife went to for her first passport.

you need to take your marriage certificate and you need to show your passport.

my wife did it in Khon Kaen, was very fast with no problems.

The ops wife does not have start at the original office of her original house book and ID. If she has the original house book in her position she can go directly to her new amphora office withe her KR 3 and within 30 minutes she will walk out with a new house book and new Id at which point she can go get her pp updated. My wife has done this.

Thanks for the responses. We don't have a house book. Honestly, we're not quite sure what that is. My in-laws may have it back in the US? My wife's spent most of her life in the US and, unfortunately, knows about as much as I do about this stuff...

We have her Thai passport and Thai ID. Her passport was issued in Bangkok and her ID was issued in Phuket. We're now in Chiang Mai. Her US passport (dual citizenship) is in her new last name. Where should I start?

Go to a district office with her ID and ask copy of the house registration ( Tambian Baan ) where the ID is registered.  All ID are registered in a Blue Book somewhere.  Then you will know where to look for the blue book and the name of the main person in the blue book.

Seems you are going to have to get that house book sent to you here in Thailand. A blue house book or  "tabian baan" has your wife listed in it and all other family members at a given location in Thailand. I'm going to ask the mods for help on this.

All Thais are registered in a tambien ban ( ทะเบียนบ้าน ). She will not need the original. A copy of the first page and the page she is registered on is enough. Or as said she can get a print out of it at any Amphoe.

The address shown on her ID card is the same address as shown on page one of the house book.

This is what one looks like.

Yes amphur for name change armed with marriage cert and relevant forms for name change when you married. Passport does need to be changed to her new name which will entail a trip to nearest passport office there will be one up there somewhere. Do this after id change quite an easy process just well in our case a long wait in both amphur and passport office. All other relevant things can be changed as you come across them bank ect ect.

We finally went to the Amphor office near Three Kings Monument today. We were told she has to change her name in Phuket, which is where her ID is registered. The person we spoke to was adamant she could only change her name in Phuket. This seems completely ridiculous.

I'd like to try another Amphor office before bothering to go to Phuket just for this. Where else can I find one in Chiang Mai? Google search is turning up nothing. I read in a previous post there's one in Hang Dong area, but no specific location was given.

Just found this on a thai Lawers site

"To change the surname in their passport, a Thai has to first change the name in their ID card. This can only be done in Thailand at the district office where they are registered"

I remembered as well my mrs said the same thing luckily enough we set up home there anyway.
