is there anywhere I can get quality prescription glasses in bkk that won't cost me a fortune. I need progressive lens that also have a variable tint ( the sort that darken as brightness increases and are clear indoors).

Try Washington Optical, Ground Floor, Amarin Plaza, SW corner of Chitlom BTS Station. I don't know if Amarin Plaza has a sign at the front. McDonalds and Starbucks occupy the front portion of the ground floor. English spoken. Open Saturdays but closed Mondays.

Glasses and frames are in general a high priced item in Thailand but if you avoid the big chains you may get a more reasonable price.

 

Many of us living here order from Zenni or other mail order sources for good price.

 

I found tint to be much too slow in the heat of Thailand (heat affects how fast they respond) and much prefer sunglasses when required.
