Just found that 3BB throttles streaming.

My download connections to UK-US- and other overseas countries are all around 10Mb, tested with testmy.net.

Streaming movies are loading very slowly, and start buffering after a few minutes.

I then test with another provider on the same device, which has less than half the speed of my 3BB, and same movies are loading fast and no buffering at all.

Next I connect 3BB again and use a free VPN to UK server, and movie loads almost as fast as on the other provider, so no doubt possible that the connection is throttled.

Problem is that the free VPN not always works, probably because it's free of course, so I'm looking for an economic option to Singapore server since to Singapore I get the best speed of all.

Please suggest a reliable, though inexpensive, VPN with Singapore servers but I guess that if no other choice even UK servers will do the job.

There is no throttling of any kind on my 3BB connection including torrents and streaming. The VPN I recommend is Astrill which has a Singapore server on its list.

I don't know if your 3BB has throttling, but mine definitely has.

My speed to UK server or US server is right now around 10Mb, tested with a 25Mb file downloaded from testmy.net.

Movies I start load very very slowly.

Next I open Cloud VPN, which is a free VPN with servers in UK-France-US. At the moment UK and US servers are oveloaded, so I connect to France server.

With the VPN active I get 3.1Mb to UK test server.

Same movies that take ages to load load now at least 5 times faster.

Thanks for the suggestion of the VPN, I had a look at it.

I'm new to VPN, so I might need some explanation.

Astrill says only 1 connection per membership, but I understand that it can be setup in the router, so doesn't that mean that all devices connected to the network can use it at the same time?

Then from all the packages they have on offer, which one should I choose?

There have been quite a few threads here, with plenty of detail and recommendations. For example:

My vague recollection is that StrongVPN, PureVPN and HMA all seem to get generally positive reviews from those posting here.

You can run a VPN in a router if it is so capable: most routers are not unless flashed with a custom firmware. And if doing so all devices attached to that router could utilize a single VPN license.

Some VPN services offer multiple simultaneous usages of their client software, on a variety of platforms.

Can you share an example of a movie or service which is presenting problems? More often than not, the remote server is over-subscribed, at any one moment.

While it is possible that 3BB is dropping packets on you, which they really cannot ideally do on a VPN pipe, it may not be the primary cause?

Astrill won't load on Android TV.

The movies I'm talking about are from a Kodi addon. If the remote server is over subscribed, it would also so with the vpn active, or when using the other isp I assume.

As I say  with the vpn active, which reduces my speed to overseas servers by 65%, the same movies ( from the same addon and at the same time) load much faster.

With the other isp, which reduces the speed by about 40% compared to 3BB, the movies load 10 times faster.

Could there be another reason for my issue?

I use Android set top box. Would that be usable?

By the way I have a router which is vpn configurable, so I guess that would clear any possible issues. Or not?

Astrill told me they could not use 3bb router.  Write and ask the VPN company before you buy.  I have a VPN on my android TV and not the router.

I've installed Astrill on a Windows machine and the android app on a tablet. I can use both on the same account. If you are getting 10Mbs you should be okay. Do have buffering problems with YouTube? If not then it is likely to be the server you are streaming from.

Run android on a Android Minix and use the UK servers to watch BBC with iPlayer. No buffering issues at all. Astrill never loses the connection. I have a 3BB fibre optic connection.

What OS?  Android is not the same as Android TV.
