BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is studying details of its plan to build underground car parks under two public parks after the initial plan to build one at Sanam Luang has been aborted, a deputy BMA governor said.

Deputy BMA governor Jumpol Samphaopol said the BMA's Public Works Department is studying the plan to build underground car parks under the Rommaneenart Park and Nakhapirom Park.

Jumpol said the two sites have been approved by the committee in charge of conserving and developing the Ratanakosin Island, which is against building an underground car park at Sanam Luang for fear of the construction would destroy ancient site rich with artefacts.

He said three to four floors of underground car park would be built at the Rommaneenart Park because the land there was found to be stable. The car park could house some 1,200 vehicles.

The car park would be connected to the Wang Burapha subway station so it could serve to boost tourism in the capital.

Jumpol said another underground car par would be built under a plot of 3 rai at Nakhapirom Park on Maharaj Road, which is owned by the Crown Property Bureau and the Treasury Department. He said the Nakhapirom car park will be built some 40 metres under the ground and would be able to house 700 vehicles.
